Looking into performance enhancements for my 99' Runner. Does this k&N FIPK System really work, or is it a joke? What happens to the mass air flow meter?

I 've heard of better results on the pre-96 models (of which I have). I think Gadget has info on his site.

I think you will be better off with just the deckplate mod and an amsoil air filter.
I have heard performance is not as good and the mounting of the K&N intake tears at the fender.

I had one on my 98 and it did make a difference in the throttle response as well as a slight increase in gas mileage. I took it off because I did not like the noise or the fact that here in Colorado there are times in the spring were the stream crossing get deep and the filter is exposed and could get water in it.
If it fit your 99 I would sell it to you cheap. Doug.

This just came up last week on the TTORA board. FWIW the general consensus I took from the thread was that it slightly improved power at the high end but at the expense of a slightly rouger low end. Most people felt that at the end of the day it was not worth the money and that a good quality filter (AMSOIL, etc.) would be a more sensible upgrade.

Well I have a 95 4Runner, now with an engine that well runs but was hydro-locked and now the pistons are hitting the valves. I have the FIPK. Save the money and get a snorkle or just get the filter for the box. If I had the box, I would not be writing here! But so is life and well, I am now getting ready to drop in a bigger and better motor with more horses. But when I get ready to wheel again, I will have a snorkle for the beast.

i had one put on my 90 bronco 5.8l. it sucked, did absolutely nothing.

I have it in my 4Runner. It does improve throttle response in the top-end, does nothing for the bottom-end, and gives a throaty sound when punched. I like it but then again K&N is all I know with all my previous and latest Toyota. I don`t know anything about those other mods so I wouldn`t be able to compare.

I have a 97 rig and notice lots of pick-up above 35 mph. It kick in hard when I accelerate to pass, plus the nice sound. However, I do agree with the other guys about it ripping the side fender. The intake needs to be mounted onto the engine for support and then the the side fender. When I accelerate hard, the intake body would move with the engine, thus causes the rip. Sorry for the long story, but go with the deckplate. Cheaper! Nice hum sound and power.

If you dont want to chop your airbox you can pop off the airbox door. Just be sure to clamp the filter to the box so there is no gap. I used a 1.5 inch
c-clamp. I believe it sounds and performs as well as the deckplate mod and its reversible.

2003 V6 Taco here.......0.6 mpg increase over 20K miles of use with the K&N FIPK. No noticeable SOTP power increase.
