Hey everyone, I just upgraded to a 2001 4runner, 3.4 auto, 180,000kms...

Mods list:

Suspension:
Sonoran Steele 1.2 Lift - worth the cash
BFG 275x70x16 AT Tires
Flowmaster Exhaust
Tundra Resonance Silencer (installed in the exhaust path, cuts down on humming vibrations about 90% but allows HIGH airflow and awesome sound)
K&N Intake

Rock Sliders - Custom Built - $400 installed
Infinity Kappa - 6.5" Components in Front & 6x9 in back.
Alpine Deck
Alpine V12 Amp - Ran new wiring also

Most of those aren't going to help with power/mpg

Got any pics of your new 4runner?

Ill take some pics tomorrow when I was it...just went to mt baker today its dirty!

I would like a little lift, the truck has small tires and old suspension so it sits low to the ground. I want around a 2-3" lift and maybe a 31" tire roughly.

I liked the look of toytecs 3" lift with adjustable coilovers, but dont want the A-arms cranked up.

Anyone have advice on a lift or feedback on toytecs?

Toytec is great, the coilovers are an easy install. If you're going for looks, thats fine, but you can fit up to a 265/75/16 tire (roughly 32's) on the stock suspension.

well after alot of searching, ive discovered ill get 1" - 1.5" if I swap out my coils for '99 coils, and ill probably use bilsteins. Does anyone know how this set-up rides and is this a better option for shocks?

I basically want to redo the stock suspension but my 2001 coils are the lowrider ones.. so im going for street use and ride comfort for the most part, ill probably end up doing a 1" BL after, then some 17" FJ wheels and bigger tires to replace my stupid factory 15" 3-spokes.

Wink

What mods for a 3rd gen are suggesed in order to get "more power" ?

Most people do a simple deck-plate mod or drop the cash for a K&N type high airflow filter, combined with an exhaust. IMO this is actually a huge improvement over stocck, maybe not in power but no-one here claimed to have a lot of power. I ran with this setup for 3 years then I got tire of the loud hummming sound from the back of the 4Runner cab (due to the flowmaster); I then swapped out flowmaster for a stock exhaust. -- It felt like all my power had gone away. I talked with the guy who works on my engine and he explained this was due to the adaptive airflow control (& a lot of other info way over my head). Anyways there is a notable difference if you upgrade to K&N and exhaust at the same time. -- So I switched back to the flowmaster but added the Tundra silencer which I have been quite happy with since it sounds loud and like a truck but the vibrations/humm at 75 mph are GONE...

I think i am lucky about the MPG, I am still getting 17/19. Although my 275x70x16 is still very close to stock, it is ~ 31.2" tire so I think that has helped.

I don't know of anything else you can cheaply do... headers are $$$ and not worth it for most owners.

I think ill go with a K+N and a flowmaster for now, im not big on the idea of the deckplate mod so I probably wont do that one.

With suspension ive decided on 99 highlander coils w/ bilsteins, then a 1" BL

One positive of the k&n or similar is that you can buy a dust cover for $15 and put it on when you go to the desert. I am not sure you can do this for deckplate mod.

Well its only my first impression ive only spent a few minutes looking under the hood since i got the truck, but it looks like the mod only lets in hot air from the engine bay. Am I right?

With the deckplate mod you screw in the deck plate to seal up the hole you've added. Returning the air box to stock.

yes. its not a cold air intake. the stock hole in the airbox does not allow sufficient airflow so the deckplate mod allows more air to get into the airbox.and as said above if you got to the destert or do water crossing you can seal the extra hole back up
