No disadvantage to off-roading, more of a personal choice. One less pedal to worry about, and that has its advantages at times.

That is very similar to what we recently bought, a 99 Highlander. We (i.e. my wife really loves it ) like it alot. Course, ours will be for the easy to moderate trails and local grocery getter. So a perfect fit and very nice ride. Congrats.

Yes, that is a great deal.
I've been looking for a 99 or 00 with a locker for awhile now.
Either they are trashed, rusted out, asking too much, not the sport edition(highlander), or the wrong color.
Guess I'm picky.

Thanks and it feels great to be part of the 4runner family now! The truck is clean without any leaks... I checked our (5) other rigs before stumbling onto this one...
It has an extra tranny cooler and 4.11 rear diff...
So would the diff cause too much increased gas consumption?

one time while stuck in mud i had to rock back and forth and found it to be hard with an auto.
i did just fine though... its all about knowing your truck.

What kind of miles per gallon are you getting? what did you expect to get?

I was thinking 16 to 18 mpg is more realistic... haven't really monitored actual mpg but will keep tabs and let you guys know...
BTW, the axle ratio is 4.30 on an auto with the factor e-locker...
Also, If you were to get stuck while off-roading, how would you "rock" a rig with auto trans? I know I did this when I had an '84 Toyota 4X4 truck to get out of a sand pit...

The window sticker MPG on my 3.4 taco trd rrlocker 4x4 with 4spd auto is 16 city and 19 highway. I drive both pretty equally, I live in a rural town so its like 45 roads with traffic lights every few miles. I manage to pull off about 19.5mpg average.
I usually take it pretty easy on the shinny pedal though.

Dont be so worried about the gas mileage, just think of the money you'll save from not having a vehicle that brakes down all the time. These 4 runners just keep running i'm at 206000 on my 97 runner.Good luck man.
