Just blew my 3rd rear end, It's time for a new housing...

Well I blew my 3rd and last 8" 4.56 rear end today. I was accelerating from 1st to 2nd on a dirt road at full throttle when it happened, stupid effective racing clutch is to blame

What companies can make me a custom housing with the brackets for the 4 link, springs, ABS and everything so I can plug and play? I'm also starting to research what rear end to run, it must be at least 9", arb compatible and good ground clearance.

The only company that I have had experience with is Moser Engineering and I'll be talking with them on Monday.

I don't know of any companies that make a "plug and play" rear axle for a Toyota. That doesn't mean that there isn't anyone that does though. A call to Moser might be a good idea. I had to engineer and build my own 9" rear but there wasn't much to it since it is leaf-sprung and has no ABS, although I did add disc brakes. With a four-link setup, it may not be too hard to fab something up using existing components. Is there a decent upper mounting point for coil-overs? That would make things real simple.

what blew up in it?
what brand of gears were you running?
i would think that on dirt, you tires and axles would absorb the shock load that your putting on it, not the ring and pinion (if thats what blew up)

I haven't opened up the diff yet but I'd bet it was the R&P. The 3rd was brand new from Toyota with 4.56 gears setup from the factory. It blew with less than 2000 miles on the gears and they have been babies since installed and I changed the fluid 3 times within that period. This was the first time I really put power to the wheels on these gears and it was on dirt in 2nd gear...WTF!

Anyways I'm hoping a shop can cut my stock axle tubes off and weld in a new carrier so all of the mounts don't have to be fabbed on a new axle.

Yeah I'm suprised it blew on a dirt road. It shouldn't have that much strain on it since you wouldn't be getting that much traction.

You should just have Toyota replace it under warranty.

Racing clutch...what clutch? I'm in need, again. This one is only a year old The stock ones just aren't holding up for me.

the clutch I have is listed under Tacoma here: Advanced Clutch I have the 6 puck copper disc which is harsh and chatters when engaging 1st gear under normal driving conditions. I'm going to be installing a normal disc soon.

I am very surprised that you have broken three rear ends… I am running the same clutch (ACT 6 puck), a Detroit Truetrac LSD with the stock 4.10 gears. I drag race the truck and bang the he!! out of second and third gear. I wonder if your gear ratio is too high for the tires and HP you are running.

Say, I have a question for you. Does the 6 puck clutch make a very loud howl sound as you slip it? The ACT is a great clutch (the only one that has held the HP so far) but it is a tough one to launch for daily driving. I have around 20K on it with zero slip at the track.

Good luck with your rear end :-)

Man, breaking ring and pinions? Is something else to blame maybe, possibly a bent axle? Just a suggestion.

.....

drgr1, really. That is what I was thinking also. Make sure you are getting the r&p matched properly. I didn't match a setup correctly and the gears ended up not meshing well. Needless to say they lasted about 10,000 miles before needing replaced. Just a thought......I'm no expert mechanic.
