I plan on pulling my rear differential to reseal it tomorrow. I also would like to do some break work. I was wondering where I can put the jack stands.

Can I just put them under the axle?

I wasnt sure if the differential and drifeshaft took some of the weight off the axle so I do not know where to put the jackstands?

I put mine under the leaf springs where they meet the axle. Don't know if that's the best place but it works for me.

if you want the axle to be able to move, let it droop and put the jackstands on the framerails

if you jsut want to be able to get under there, jack it up and put the jackstands under the axle tubes as far wide as possible

I always use jackstands w/ overkill in mind. I always have some on the frame and under whatever axle, unless I want it to droop, then I double up on the frame and usually put the tire under there too. You can't be TOO careful w/ a 4000 lb body masher.

Good call, I was just curious if the 3rd member supported any of the weight on the axle or was it just the leaf springs and shocks.

I don't know about the 87 runners, but in my owners manual, it shows the correct placement for jackstands under the truck. I don't remember off the top of my head if the axel was recommended or not, but it's worth a look in your manual if you have it.
