Hey.. no offense to all the 2WD owners outthere, but isn't calling a 2WD 4Runner a "4Runner" make it an oxymoron? I mean, if it is 4Runner, it should be 4WD.. otherwise, should it not be 2Runner? Heheh... Kind of like Lincol Aviator... I have yet to see that car fly... of Lincoln navigator commercials that have showed the car underwater like a submarine.. Go ahead, try it, then see if the warranty covers it .. "But hey, I saw them do it in the commercial..". But, I digress, this is not a post about stupid car commercials.

Since I cannot post a poll, whats your opinion? Please vote 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5...

1) Only 4WD 4Runners are "true" 4Runners
2) It is still a 4Runner, even if it is 2WD
3) Change the name to 2Runner
4) Toyota should never have made a 2WD truck
5) Who cares what it is called

besides, my friend had a '78 and i had an '84 2wd, they were some of the most fun trucks to drive out there

I guess it is true that there had to be 2WD before 4WD... kind of an evolution... apes to humans kind of way.. I am just glad I do not have a 2WD, hehe. I laugh whenever I see a 2WD 4Runner with what looked like 33" or 35" tires and some major lift. I have seen one driving around here. It was definitely a 2WD.. I was amazed when I got a closer look . Now, what good does that do?

2WD 4Runner...it's got 4 wheels. If it fits your needs then who cares.

I'm not offended, but then again I have a 2WD and a 4WD rig. I've heard some 2WD w/locker can perform just as well as a 4WD w/out lockers. On the other hand some may like the look but don't wheel or have places to wheel. So why spend the extra on something you'll never use. I suppose I pick 5 because I don't care all that much. But what would they change the Hilux to?

I thought that they started making them in 2wd on the 2nd gen..

If that's the case, IMO, I think that they introduced the 4Runner with the thought of it only being 4WD.
So in 1984 it would be option 1
Now it is option 2

I totally disagree with whoever said that. Anyone crazy enough to attempt steep declines without true "4LO" is just asking to roll.

And going up a steep hill? I hope they have a SC...cause you are gonna have to rap that thing out around 3600 to get going.

Flame on people, but a 2WD w/locker aint gonna touch a 4WD without.

In some cases yes, a 4wd is better...but I think in most cases a 2wd w/ locker will be just as good if not better. Hills aside...lets talk simple rock climbing where a locker will rule. 4wd/ no locker will do no good unless tires are grounded. 2wd+locker will rule it.

Point is...we can think of cases where either would be better.

Well, what goes up must come down. That is my main point. Ridin' the brakes down steep hills just isn't going to cut it. You are going to pick up speed fast without proper gearing (as I am sure you know).

I see your point about the above mentioned scenario.

I feel that for the majority of wheeling most of us do here, a 2WD with locker would be unsafe.

We are all entitled to our opinion.

I definately agree, it should be a two runner, as for the Lincoln aviator, put me behind the wheel, you'll see it fly, although the landing might be a problem. (although the warranty probably wouldn't cover the car flying )

Remember that the majority of all 4Runners have never left the pavement. I vote #2. By-the-way the next 4Runner I buy will be 2wd because I have only been in one situation where 4wd was actually needed and if I did not have 4wd I would not have been in that situation. Otherwise it is just extra weight , cost and lower gas milage.Thats my opinion.

When buying the 4Runner finding a 4cyl and 2WD was the preferred sensible choice. Both would of been more than sufficient, but then again, so would a Rav4 :pig:
