The AIRAID MIT, part # 510-934 and the AIRAID Jr. Kit, part # 510-734 are both marketed as intake kits for the '99-'02 TOYOTA 4Runner 3.4L V6 and the '99-'04 TOYOTA Tacoma 3.4L V6. Many questions have come up as to whether or not this will also work on previous model year (MY) 4Runners or Tacomas in that same generation span. (To keep this as simple as possible) The concern is over the "extra" line on the '98 and earlier rigs. The answer is an enthusiastic and confident YES. Here's why: AIRAID's MIT tube has 2 separate threaded ports - closest to the MAF. AIRAID supplies a 1/4" NPT, 1/4" Barb Fitting (AIRAID part # KITFITTING02) which is a cheap, plastic piece (see 1st pic below). Additionally, they supply a 1/4" NPT Plug (AIRAID part # KITFITING04) to cap off the unused threaded port. For the '99 and up 3.4L equipped rigs, this is all you need. However, for the rest of us who have '98 and earlier rigs equipped with the 3.4L, to make the MIT work, you simply want to buy a 2nd fitting equivalent to the 1/4" NPT, 1/4" Barb Fitting. Since plastic is cheap and brittle, why not upgrade to a durable brass piece? Guess what? LOWE's has these for $1.83 each. Buy 2 WATTS A-192 Hose Barb Adapters (1/4" Barb x 1/4" MIP), part # 17000192. Again, '99 and later guys, buy 1 (as an ugrade over the supplied plastic one from AIRAID). '98 and earlier guys buy 2 so you can get all of your hoses connected. I also found that the supplied plastic version from AIRAID didn't want to thread in no matter how hard I tried. The brass ones threaded up with ease!

Buy this. Pick up (QTY: 1) if your rig is '99 or newer. Pick up (QTY:2) if your rig is '98 or earlier.

And in case you wondered what the corner of the engine bay looks like with the stock airbox, elbow, and washer fluid filler neck removed...




Not bad for a rig that gets taken off-road pretty frequently. Although my wife would have you know that I spend way too much time detailing it after each trip

If I'm not mistaken, the AIRAID JR. is simply the Modular Intake Tube (MIT) + their foam drop-in panel filter. But I'm running the TrueFlow filter in my airbox, along with the AIRAID MIT.

I did the same thing a long time ago on my '96....
BUT doesn't it make you wonder why that extra line comes capped/plugged for our rigs?? Did they used to sell it for '96-'98 4runners but stopped because they found a certain flaw with the way it performed- for that line??
I asked Airaid these questions but they didn't have a clue...one idiot said the hood might not close.

I added "O" rings to my brass fittings for a better seal...

^ I always wondered if ALL '96-'98 runners had two lines there...apparently not.

So you have nothing to worry about elton. You'll definitely like this intake. It's not like you'll notice anything drastic but if your extremely particular and keen about how your truck resoponds to throttle, idle, and sound then you'll love the Airaid intake.

IMO the deckplate mod sucks.
I researched the deckplate mod for days and even months. Till this day people STILL have negative issues with it.

I've been running my own Elbow Intake mod for awhile with no complaints.

Despite the people that didn't want to accept it out of jealously and/or ignorance, it's been awesome...

Cool, Rocket, well now we have it documented. The O-rings are a great idea too, I've got a few lying around that I'll put on at your suggestion. Also, I dig your write-up on using the factory intake elbow as another air inlet - that's pretty sweet!

I was even looking at the factory airbox itself and wondering how you could turn it so the existing inlet is facing more forward - towards the front of the vehicle, instead of drawing air from that hole in the fender. But then you'd probably have to start hacking it up and losing any ability to put it back to stock down the road. Too bad.

Another thing that I thought of was that back in the day, Advanced Engine Management (AEM) used to include an aluminum air horn (velocity stack) with their Cold Air Intake kits (I had one on a '95 Civic EX at one point in the past). If you could incorporate a something like that into the front of the factory airbox, that'd be pretty cool too. Then pop out the headlight and get true ram air Totally unrealistic for off-roading though. LOL!

Also, Rocket, I was just noticing in your posts that you had capped off the small port on your factory airbox that connected a line to your charcoal canister. Any reason why you ditched that line and replaced it with a small breather filter on the canister itself? Just curious...

My 98 only has one as well.

Just did the deckplate mod, it was cheap and super easy, if I dont like it I can screw the cap back on.
