improper backlash sound?

improper backlash sound?
background:
I had my rear arb equiped diff and gears exchanged for a stock one out of an older runner. Not sure which yr runner it was. Everything works fine, 4wd engages, etc.
current problem:
Since the new diff has been put it, tt has always made this machine-like whinning sound as you push on the gas. When you let off the gas, the sound decreases in intensity but doesn't go away completely until the truck is stopped.
my best guess:
Is that it's something to do with the backlash not being set properly. Does this sound like that this would be the cause? Anything else I should consider?

sounds similar to the sound i had when my rear diff chipped some teeth in the ring gear.
but as i remember it, the sound was louder when off the gas, and the ticking noice accelerated with speed.

ok I'll drain the oil and check for metal fragments and then if there present, I need to order a new set of gears for it, correct? Anything else I should look for?

Sounds just like the sound my rear d-shaft front u-joint made when it had almost completely grenaded, but since you just replaced the diff, I'd start there. You might try driving by someone and see if they can pinpoint the location of the sound to insure that it is indeed coming from the diff.

no I'm not going to take it apart myself. There is a somewhat "local shop" nearby and he has reasonable rates, plus a lift. I just needed an idea of what I was getting into before I just showed up at his place.

Since installed a set up/ regeared 3rd, I get a noise that sounds/feels like when I used to drive my stick civic in high rpm/engine breaking situation. Form what I have read, it sounds like it could be an off backlash setting on the input gear? It only happens at 60mph and above when I let off the gas. I am able to get around the noise by using cruise control but I would like to fix it

I still have my old stock 4.11 gears (if your's are screwed up). PM me if you want them, I'll sell them for cheap.

Could be bad bearings. Pinion bearings being too tight or too loose. Did you mess with the flange and/or pinion seal at all? How many miles on the 3rd?

I had a shop replace the pinion seal. I think they might have done a sloppy job. Only a out 3k on the diff. I have air tools now and could get the pinion nut off. Anywhere good to dead up on adjusting those settings?

If they replaced the seal, most likely there is way too little or too much preload on the pinion bearings.
The correct way to set it up is with the 3rd member out of the axle housing and tighten the pinion nut until the correct amount of turning torque is achieved.
a re-used bearing should be 5.2-8.7 in lbs
Total preload should be 8.7-13.9 in lbs (turning torque through the pinion bearings with carrier installed)

I have been searching for some sort of differentials for dummies material online. Can anyone direct me to a discription of how to do this? I have a to replace my pinion seal and flange too. Also the dif has a solid spacer if that makes a difference.

FWIW, if you are getting noise now, its likely going to need a new install kit(all new bearings) to fix it.
