Igniton lock help/Key
Hey guys long time.My ignition lock is broken I think. The key gets stuck going in sometimes and then if I do get in all the way I can only turn it enought to unlock the steering wheel. It was doing it for a while.I used to be able to jiggle it an it would eventually turn over, but now I can only unlock the steering wheel. This is on a 98 runner limited. If I do need to take it out do I have to take off the steering wheel or not? Thanks guys for any help and advice.Russ

Just replaced mine. Real simple. Find one online or someone parting out a 3rd gen. All you need to do is pop the plastic ignition surround and loosen up the 2 bolts under the steering wheel dash for more exposure. Then you need something like a small toothpick to get to the release button. You do have to have the key in and turned to ACC to get it out but once you hit the release button underneath the cylinder it slides right out. New one (with key turned to ACC) slides right in and locks in place.

Replace the 'wafers'
Whatever they are. Remove the lock mechanism as described above and take it to a competent locksmith. It cost $20.00 and I had to leave it overnight so the guy could work on it.
Good luck
