Over the last couple of months the key to my ignition is getting harder and harder to fit in the ignition. It will slide in about 90% of the way and will go no further. I usually have to jiggle it to get it to fit properly in the ignition to start it. This morning it took my about 5 minutes to get it to go it, so I'm starting to get a little worried. I have a 2002 4Runner. Is this a problem others have had? I haven't gotten a new key made, but thought I'd check here first. Thanks

i would stay away from wd40, even in small doses. i would never want to insert a lubricant into the ignition. if the teeth of your key are looking worn its simply getting harder for the ignition to read the key. the main thing you must know is don't force it. if you do you risk damaging components inside and costing yourself a whole lot of money. since you have a 2002, your key code may still be saved in the database at the dealership. for 15 bucks they'll give you an oem one with brand new teeth, you gotta remember when you make a copy of an old key you're just getting the same wear of a key with new material. best of luck, let us know how it goes

Wd40 or similar is fine...think about it this way ... if you put it in your door lock, get it on key , then use key in ignition...no one has problems with this. But the above is right in that the stuff is flammable, after all!

Dielectric grease should work fine too

I had the exact same problem. I tried the WD-40 and even some graphite lube with no luck. Go down to the Toyota dealership and grind a new key from the VIN number; that should solve your problem.

Also, all dont forget that if you have a pile of keys on your key ring it will wear out your tumblers. Chicks (also known as women) are susceptable to this because seem to have as much stuff on thier key rings as in thier purse...

Squirt it down with WD-40. There is nothing wrong with WD-40. Also get a new key.

Thanks all. I went to the dealer on Saturday. Gave him my VIN and for $15, he cut me a new key. No problems since getting the new key!

good to hear, i was pretty sure it was 15 but i hadn't had it done in a year or so. also you may want to get the 4 digit key code from them next time and keep it in a safe place, after 7 years the database discards your key info
