Ignition

I was wondering what everyone's opinion on performance ignitions are? I'm thinking of getting a new one. I've found that Jacobs Ignition is very good, really easy to install, and give quite a bit of power. It's somewhat expensive, around $400. I'm just wondering if any one has ignition on their truck and how they like it.

Check out Churnd's Website. He has a Jacobs Pro Street Ignition setup. He has some other stuff you might be interested in as well.

I have a Crane HI-6 and a Crane PS-92 race coil connected to the factory distro through a Crane Universal Trigger Adaptor and the Bosch Platinum +4 sparkplugs. It didn't make much of a noticeable difference on the truck though. Took the HI-6 off my old Datsun which became quite the monster with the HI-6, Accel Superstock (big square) coil, Accel Superstock spiral core wires, Accel cap/rotor and regular copper sparkplugs back in the day. By the way anyone know whether the 88-91 and 92-95 distros are interchangable? I want to go to the earlier one since I want to get a performance wire set!!!

ignition upgrade

884,I'm on that same quest.Someone had told me that you could get the same results from a accel super coil and a good set of wires.I'm still trying to find out if its true.I mean,$60 vs $400 sounds a whole lot better to me.If someone can expand on this,please list the do's and don't.Plug gap,timing,AFM,do any of these need to be adjusted after the switch?I'm running an 87' 4runner with a 22re/5spd/4x4.Thanks in advance!

I need to update my website.

I'd definitely get the ignition if you have the money, but I'd do it last. I felt more improvement in power from everything else I did... the least came from the ignition, but I ran without it for a week and I could tell a difference. That being said, you'd probably want to try getting 8.5mm wires, a new distributor cap, and new plugs first before you decide to pop for the whole system. Stay away from those Bosch 4 prong platinum plugs or Splitfire plugs. If anybody ever said they got an improvement from them over new stock plugs, it was all in their head. Stick with NipponDenso's because your truck was made to run best with them.

I promise you if you do intake/exhaust mods first, you'll get the best improvement over stock hp. If you think installing headers is out of your skill range, let me tell you this. If you have a socket wrench set with a couple of extensions, a pipe cutting tool, and some patience, this can be done in your own garage.
