Idle keeps fluctuating

Hello all,
I am new here and this is my first post.

I have a '94 4x4 4 cyl (22re) extra cab with just under 100,000 on it. Aside from new exhaust, brakes and tires, nothing has been done to it major.

In the morning, My truck will idle from 800 rpm to 1500 rpm, then drop back to 800 rpm and rise to 1500 and continue this until I get to work (10 minute drive).

I have run injector cleaner thru two tanks of gas.

Anybody else have a problem like this?

Start by reading diagnostic codes from the engine and a basic tune up. Your owners manual will tell you how to do this, or search the web/board for instructions. If there are no codes in the engine, post a reply, will give you more ideas.

It could concievably be your TPS (throttle position sensor) but could be a ton of other things as well. TPS fault code may or may not show up... there is a way to test your TPS, just search the web.

I would start with codes and do a full tune up - plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter, air filter, etc. Once all the tune up stuff is in top shape, and all diagnostic fault codes have been taken care of, one can start looking for more obscure stuff.

Does this happen right from the start or only under certain conditions - w/cold start injector active/inactive, only when you accelerate, only when your foot is on the brake...?
The first thing I'd look for is leaks in the air intake (between the air filter and throttle body) and loose ground wires in the engine bay and in-cab kick panels.

Does the 22re have a cold start injector?

My first thought also was the TPS. When mine was bad/out of adjustment I didn't get a code.

Here is a great site that will tell you all about it. The symptoms of a bad one are near the bottom of the page. And what do you know? Varying idle speed is the first one listed.

Good Luck

And welcome to the boards.

funny, I had the exact same problem, and i took the truck to the dealer 5 times, they checked the same crap over and over and finally, a mechanic that has worked there for 20 years told me that "some of those engines just do that" until they warm up. However, there was a problem with my timing chain tensioner once that was causing the oscillations in idle, but that was after the truck already warmed up. There is pretty much nothing you can do for that-- well maybe check all the same stuff that i did, pcv valve, IAC valve, throttle body cleaned with no gunk on it, O2 sensor, MAF assembly and the MAP sensor. The dealer checked all those and they were fine and still the engine would oscillate until it was warmed up. I just learned to stop being lazy and wake up and warm my truck up before i left for school.
