Ideal Slider Length

I have been doing some research on sliders for 3rd gens, and have seen alot of people say that the standard length that most places offer is not quite long enough and that the length for tacos is a little too long.

I measured the pinch weld and came up with about 66" (if i remember correctly lol) as a good estimate for a length that leaves the rocker protected, but does not hit the tires. I am on 295's and dont foresee going any bigger than that.

what is everyones opionions about this? i dont want to start a flame fest.....

Kyle

I think mine started as 68"...now they have been trimmed to about 67" So, IMO you are in the ball park.

I have the 67" "Trail Gear" sliders which are just fine for length.

TG recommends 58" sliders for 4runners, I have a pair of 60" I got from Foxfab and I think the extra length is good. I am running 34" TSL's and never have any clearance issues and have never had anything hit the body past them.

IMO, these are not long enough. A rock can get between the slider and and tire subsequently destroying your fender, I've seen it happen twice.

I'd rather trim sliders to clear tires than fix fenders because the sliders are too short.

IMO, these should be about perfect length.

The problem is that you can't really trim the sliders if they have hoops on the outside. Also, if you lack the fab skills to recap them, then you are SOL. The 60" sliders reach to the fender flare on the front and back, IMO you need to leave some room in there. When I first put my 60" sliders on I thought that the extra 2" front and rear were too much, but after using them for a while I realized that they were perfect. I have a buddy who made his closer to 67" and his 32's rub the front of the slider when compressed. I MIGHT go as long as 64" if I made my own, but definitely not 67". I have wheeled pretty hard trails and I have never had something get in there, I have wheeled with Taco's and 4runner's of various years with the standard length sliders and have never seen it happen either.

I am but I am also comparing it to third gens I have seen/wheeled with. Since the sliders for a 1st and 3rd gen are the same length according to all these places, I assumed we had about the same amount of rocker to cover. However, I wrench with/wheel with Lee and Bflooks, who both have 3rd gens with 60" sliders, so I am comparing it to all of them.

Knowing the way Lee and others with 33's rub when compressed, that seems to long. Please note, I am not saying it IS too long, just that it seems that way from the pics IMO.

Jim, that pic works, i was trying to see how close it is to the tires and where the pinch weld ends. I am not planning on doing any hardcore stuff for a while, but i want to get it done right the first time. and if i fab them up, i can make them whatever length i need.
how far from the pinch weld am i aiming for? 1/2" or more?

I use 66" on my 3rd gen 4Runner sliders:

Unless you want the cut down to 60" to fit in between the stock fender flares.
