I want to lock my keys in my truck.

This might seem a little odd but hear me out. I still use my vehicle for emergency response every now and then. Right now my options are either shut down the engine and have the ability to lock my truck or leave it running, unlocked and vulnerable. I want to be able to use my keyless entry to lock the truck while it's running. Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Maybe like an aftermarket alarm system, like a viper system, with a remote lock/ unlock, and just keep the remote on you, and leave the keys in the vehicle

I have an aftermarket w remote start but it turns off after 15 min. What about a 2nd key to just lock the door while its running?. If the things running any would be theif would think they could steal it. With my remote starter it will cut the engine if you press the brake to shift it out of Park if the key is not 1st inserted and turned to the "on" position.

Just some options. Why do you want to keep it running?

Either get a spare key or key fob and use it to lock the door after you get out.

i dream of a numbered keypad on mine one day; then I can lock my keys in there and go for a run or whatever without my giant keyring.... pretty handy, can't ever lock yourself out unless you get knocked in the head and forget your number combo, hahaa

I do this with my daily driver, I just keep a extra key in my wallet, and lock the car, go do what I need to do, and put the spare key in the door when I come back. Its great. Haven't done it with the yota yet though.

This works wonders on cold mornings when you want to warm it up while your getting ready

Short of installing a remote start (really not THAT hard) a spare key is your best bet. That said, my remote start/keyless entry system has a "pit stop" mode. When i park, i can push the remote start button, remove the keys, exit my truck, press the lock button, and it keeps running. When i come back, it's just like a normal remote start. Unlock the door, hop in, put the key in the ignition, and away i go. I don't use that feature much, but i think that's what you're looking for.

Here's a ghost story for you........ My 99 3rd gen locks its own doors every now and again about 30 seconds after closing the doors. Not all the time.......intermittant.....but its been doing it for a few years. Never figured out why.
I would just keep a key in my wallet so you can spring into action and not have to worry about keeping your truck open. And of course...another spare under the truck. Cheap fix........fobs are freaking ridiculous in price last i checked.

My 2001 T4R also locks the doors after about 20 seconds or so but not if the key fob/keys are inside it.

I spare key probably would be my best bet. I was thinking using the fob. But keeping a key is simple solution.

I want to keep it running on scene to keep power for emergency lighting and AC or Heat. I use LED lighting though so not much of a problem. It's something I'm so use to when I'm in department vehicles it's a hard habit to brake when I find my self using my own truck. Often I forget to pull my key I just grab what ever I need out of the trunk and go. It would be nice to be able to just push lock on my fob and the doors lock.

Some of our ambulances have safety switches that allow you to remove the key like described above. it's something I considered but not really something I want to spend the money on. I guess I was hoping someone knew of something like the "grey wire mod" for the keyless entry system that would allow me to do this.

The toyota service key is nice and flat, and always rides in my wallet.
