I think I might have found a Toyota to start with!

So after a few months of searching and searching.... I think I've finally found the one..

It's a 1986 4runner with a 22re (plan on turboing, for more power)
5-spd w/ power steering and no a/c.
Here's the thing.

Pros:
-Looks like it has a brand new head on it and the engine bay is really nice looking.
-It's about 5 minutes away from my house.
-It's at a used car dealership that specializes in cheap ass cars (so price is negotiable)
-Seats aren't too bad
-Headliner still looks new.
-it's white (I originally wanted black but this works)
-Custom Tow bumper

Cons:
-It's got rust on it but no holes..
-Needs tires
-Interior is crap (only decent thing is headliner and seats.)
-It belonged to a major smoker (ashtray is full)
-Smells a little funny.

I'll take some pictures of it when I go back today.. but they will be camera phone pictures and I'm not sure how to transfer them to here.

The guy wants $2400 in house financing
or $1600 cash.
But I know this dealership and I'm sure I can snag it for $1000 because in that part of town money talks big time.

Well guys lemme know what you think and if you can think of anything I should look for on it please reply.

Thanks.

I wonder what it would look like with the top off.

Oh yea it has 210000 miles on it and it's a 4x4 I think with the sr5 pkg.
Not sure if it has power locks/windows but I know it has a tilt wheel, and some junk cassette player.
The back window rolls down when you put the key in and turn on the rear.

even $1600 isn't a bad deal on one of those, if there's no major mechanical problems. the drivetrain that's in there is pretty foolproof and easily upgradeable

walk in with 1g cash, lay it on the table and ask for the keys. if they say anything other than sold, gather up the cash and walk out. you wont get far before they chase you down!

good luck, it sounds like a decent rig. a good interior detailing and liberal application of baking soda or febreeze should take care of the aroma.

I went back and got some pictures of it...
I tried to start it a few times and no go.. but I pressed the safety cancel button and it worked...
I don't remember having to press taht button in the 86 pickup I had about 5 years ago.
Is that a bad thing?

mine fires right up without that button, thats not normal,

if your not willing to put work into it i wouldnt get one that cheap, i would look for a better runner.

when you tried turning it over with the clutch in did it try to turn over? or was it as if the battery was dead? cause mine if the pedal isnt ALL the way in, it will just 'click' as if theres no power. and if you did have the pedal all the way in, theres a possibility that its just an electrical contact thats worn out or busted. (considering it works fine with the button)

I hope I just put these on here right.

It's got this crazy looking spoiler/wing thing on the back.. that will no longer be there if I buy it.

Ok the 3rd picture is of a thing that was right next to the throttle cables.. it was just hanging there and looked out of place. Anyone konw what it is and if it's supposed to be hooked up to something?

Looks like it worked the first time.

The driver's seat has tears in it... I didn't notice it the first time I saw it.
The door panel is missing the lower section.

What in the world is with the two door handles??
That so people in the back seat can open the door?

The clutch start switch might need an adjustment (hopefully)...

When I first got my truck it wouldnt start unless I pressed the start cancel switch, later on I found out that the clutch start switch was just loose. The switch is located on the bracket that holds all 3 paddles, and right above the clutch paddle.

Yup! There is a little paddle on the front passenger seat for the rear passengers to step on, it slides the front pass. seat foward so they can get out.

-----Under the hood:
-the battery was all screwed up, the terminals are corroded away and the battery is on it's last limb.
-The radiator cap is leaking WATER (No antifreeze, just water). Which means that it wasn't properly maintained, but fixable.
-It makes a clicking noise somewhat similar to a exhaust leak, but I looked at the exhaust and it's completely stock so an exhaust leak is expected after 18 years.
-The head on it does look brand new and it's not leaking oil and it doesn't smoke at all, even during warm up.
-----Exterior:
-Tires are decent and the spare looks unused.
-All of the wheel wells have rust on them with a weak ass touch up job.
-I didn't see any rust on the frame.
-Definetly needs to be repainted.
-All of the lights work.
-----As for the interior:
-the drivers seat is ripped and all of the others have "old seat" stains.
-Carpet is nasty... never heard of those new inventions called vacuums.
-Alot of the interior pieces are pulled off but still in the truck.
-The rear window switch in the center console doesn't work. (eh?)

That's about all i can think of.
It still seems worth it, it would be very fun to fix it. Alot of space to work with.

Its normal . Thats the air filter end, the other end connects to the DP diaphragm(which reduces HC and CO emissions by opening the trottle valve slightly more during deceleration than idle... ).

heh it's normal! that's a good thing, I just get a little paranoid when I see things hanging around looking like they should have more of a purpose.

I THINK I had the clutch all the way in to start it... but after I pressed the button it started right up with no problems, maybe 2 revs from the starter. The guy went to go get a jumper box thinking the battery was dead and he came back and I had it running.

Guess I should've just been stumped and offered him 350 bucks for a non-running vehicle.
But that's just bad karma.
