I think I finally fixed it!!

I think I finally fixed my 89 Yota pickup. I installed an 88 22RE in my 89 truck and it ran fine for 4 days. On the fourth day it just shut off and quit without any warning. Then it would start up and shut off immediately. I posted two threads for advice and I replaced the ignition switch and fuel pump. After purchasing two costly parts and not fixing the problem, I was disgusted. Finally someone suggested that the injectors may be different from the 88 to the 89. I checked my shop manual and they were right. The 88 injectors were rated at 2 ohms and the 89 injectors were rated at 14 ohms. I was using the 89 ECM computer (which was supposed to be pushing 14 ohm injectors) to run the 2 ohm injectors on the 88 motor I swapped in. With that lower resistance the computer just fried. I can compare this situation to car audio. Take a power amplifier rated at four ohms and bridge it down to half an ohm. It will play music and work only for a short while until it blows from the low resistance. Same thing with the ECM. It ran for four days with the 2 ohm injectors then just blew.

Just wanted to put this information up if anyone is attempting to do any engine swaps from 88 to 89 or later.

Could anyone tell me what the years are generation 1, 2, and 3? I am fairly new to this site and don't understand all this Gen 1,2, and 3 stuff!

Glad to hear that you resolved your issues. Good detective work!

As for the generations...here's link to a good site that has all kinds of great info on each generation including model year changes.

Yep, that did it! I put the new ECM in today and it fired right up. However I did notice some fuel leaking from the number 2 injector (I installed the 89 injectors in the 88 motor) When I rotated the injector it quit leaking. As long as I don't smell gas, I guess I'm in good shape!

This link refers to 4 Runners. The 4Runner models are generally one generation behind.

Generation 1 P/U 79-83 [all had solid front axle]

Generation 2 P/U 84-88 (4Runner Gen 1 84-89) [84-85 had solid front axle]

Generation 3 P/U 89-95 (4Runner Gen 2 90-95)

Generation 4 P/U 96-04 (4Runner Gen 3 96-02)

Generation 5 P/U 05-?? (4Runner Gen 4 03-??)

I'm sure someone will correct my errors - this is how I remember it anyway...
