I Got a New Truck Today!

Like the Title says, I got a new (well used, but new to me) truck!! Don't worry, the 4runner is staying with me! But with 35s on it, I needed to get a new DD that get more mpgs. So here it is..
It's a '98 regular cab Tacoma 2.7L 4x4 5 speed w/ 188K. Stock as can be, it must be the ultra base model because it has no ABS, no tach (not even with the stick shift), not even a tripmeter! And it's sitting on some tiny little 235/75/15s. I'm keeping them though, because I've already driven it 120 miles and my tank is still 2/3 full! I'm very happy with it and it seems to run and drive awesome!

On to the pics (sorry they are small)...

It's so nice to have 3 pedals again!

Reminds me of mine.. 3 years ago..
Except mine is a higher end model. Tach, trip meters, buckets, center console, and cruise control.

Mind sharing how much you paid? Just curious.

Now, get to adjusting those valves and checking the exhaust manifold for cracks!

You got an exceptional deal on yours! I paid $6,200, NADA says clean retail is $6,700. Considering I have been on the hunt for 3 months, I think I did ok. Good thing is, I won't have to worry about the valves for a good long while hopefully. Apparently, it burnt a valve a few thousand miles ago, lost compression in that hole and they just rebuilt the whole head to avoid issues with the other valves. The engine runs strong now.

I don't know the 2.7 nearly as well as the 3.4, so I'm not aware of the cracked exhaust mani issue. I'll have to search about it a little, but is there a noise or something to watch out for? It sounds purrrfect to me so far!

According to the gear codes on ttora, it looks like it has 3.58 gears, but with the tiny little tires, it still has good power (more than I thought it would have). I made it up the mtn in 4th 90% of the way. And so far I've gone ~120 miles on 1/3 a tank so it's getting good mpgs too.

Looks great! I've been thinking about doing the same. my little work truck gets 27-30 mpg ( 2004, ext cab, 2wd, 2rz ). its a dream compared to my 4Runner. ( 92 4runner, 3vz, 5 speed, 4.88 gears, no lift and 33s ) that only gets 13.75 mpg.

That's awsome man. Enjoy the manual hubs. I wish I could get 120 miles on a third of a tank. Congrats. Where did you find it?

for only being a 4cyl, that motor still is a work horse... I loved it in my last 4runner.

I'm in the same market - trying to find a commuter

Thanks guys, the truck is running great! I'm really happy with it! I think I'm gonna get a header for it soon (probably LCE or Doug Thorley) because I don't want to deal with the cracked mani thing in the future. Maybe Santa will bring me some $$! Merry Christmas to all of my fellow Yotaheads!!

Why would you not want the toyota tube header?
