I blew up My motor!
Well on the trip out to Hungry Valley with some fellow Yototech members, there was this water hole that just urged me to run thru it. Needless to say I wasn't thinking that the water could block the intake so much that it would cause something in the engine to snap. I guess I'll be getting a snorkel after I finish rebuilding my engine.
I had my deck plate plug in, but forgot that I wasn't running my inner fender cover, so the water quickly filled the airbox. The intake had some water in it, but after pulling all the sparkplugs, which were dry, the engine was still froze up. I put it in 5th gear and had the guys push it to see if the engine would even turn over. It turned slightly and made a clunk. Either I sucked a valve, snapped a rod or it's rod bolts, or possibly broke a crank. I won't know for a few days, hopefully by then, I'll get some time to teardown the engine to see exaclty what happened :cry: :cry: :cry:
EDIT* Update one rod through the side of the block and 2 others broke, crankshaft still in one piece. both heads are OK

oops.
When I last rolled mine I tried to start it and hydro-locked it with oil. I got lucky, only damage was a few broken teeth on the ring flex-plate ring gear.

I was wondering how long it was gonna take before a picture was gonna be posted. I may just buy one of the imported 30k motors from Japan. I'll know for sure by this weekend, hopefully post some carnage shots too!

Same happened to me...When I rolled, my motor got hydro-locked (yes I know, hydro=water, but give me a break) with oil...I am hoping you have an easy issue to relsolve!!

So, for educational purposes, what is the recommended protocol for hydrolocked vehicles, if you think you've got water or oil? Pull plugs one at a time, and turn over once or twice just to shoot the water/oil out?

"Hydrolocked" is short for hydraulically locked, it can happen with any fluid, not just water.
To fix, you need to pull all the plugs and turn over until fluid stops belching out of the holes. In my case, three of eight cylinders (all on passenger side) had significant amounts of oil in them. Left quite a mess that had to be cleaned up. Then replace the plugs and cross your fingers

I hydrolocked the motor, the airbox was completely full of water as well as the intake. Just say there was water and mud in everything!
I've flooded out engines in the past and all I've had to do was pull all the plugs, crank the motor, change all the fluids afterwards and everything was fine.
In the picture that was posted, I was in the middle of removing all the sparkplugs, thinking it was gonna be a simple procedure.

I hydrolocked my old 85 truck with the 22RE. I ended up cracking the block, bending a few rods and doing some other damage (it was a very deep water hole).
I found it cheaper to just replace the motor.
I hope all goes well..... Let us know how the rebuild goes

Not sure what insurrance co. you have, but mine covered a good amount of the cost to plop in a new engine when I snapped a rod playing in a canal. Its worth looking into though.
I found a '97 engine w/ 55k on it through car-parts.com for $1500 and had it installed for under $900. Not bad at all...it's not as expensive as you may think...especially when toyota will quote you $7k.
STAY OUT OF THE WATER!!! :pat: ITS NOT WORTH THE PICTURE! Even with a snorkel, there are lots of other parts water will destroy.

Ohh...hang on to your engine if you do a swap instead of a rebuild, my roommate parted it out for a good $500. The heads are worth quite a bit cleaned up.
If you were in some pretty muddy water, I think you'll find out fast that a swap is a better way to go. Mine had soooo much sludge in it. PITA to clean out, so just swapped and saved time.
