Hub Nut removal

I got a question. This weekend i'm gonna do my front brakes. Everyone says I need a 2 1/8 Socket or 54 mm. Can I just use a wrench? I don't want to go buy a socket that big unless i have to.

I've managed to get the nut off with a pair of channelocks before. However, you will never get it back on tight enough. You're gonna have to get the socket. It ran me about 30 bucks at sears (socket and 3/4 to 1/2 adapter).

the screwdriver method is ok in a bind but its worth the investment to go ahead and get the socket to be able to accuratly adjust the bearing pre-load. It just doesnt make sense to cut corners. Get the socket and adapter so you can use a 1/2in ratchet. If you plan on keeping the truck it WONT be the last time you use it.

Plus it make a great conversation piece when you open up your toolbox and people see that huge socket and ask WTF do you use that for!

Got mine at www.drivewerks.com, but looks like the price went up to $18.50 on the site, I think I paid $10 with $5 shipping.

not sure where you live, but in cali you can go to a autozone and they will lend you a socket that size for free, you can also get a breaker bar if you need it. I just did it a couple weeks ago!

I'm actually heading down today to buy one from Napa. Definately worth buying it as you'll use it again.
