My 5VZ is sitting on an engine stand at my house. I need to get the crank pully off so I can have it machined. How can I lock the crank in place so I can break the crank pully bolt loose?

usually i try to get that off while it's in the car, using a breaker bar, the frame of the car and then bumping the starter to break it loose. in the event that the motor is already out, i've had to lock the fly wheel to the engine stand and the get after it with an impact wrench. if you use a breaker bar, remember the game is not about torque, it's about impact; so go find a big fornicating hammer

well, that just it. The motor cant be put into the car untill the crank pully is cut down or replaced by something that has less belt sections. The one on there is too thick. I guess I will have to rig up something to hold the flywheel in place.

Have you tried soaking it in penetrant and using a big impact wrench (air will work better)? Since it's a very quick impact and not sustained torque the motor should in theory turn very little, and eventually the bolt should come loose. I haven't done it for this application, but have used the same trick in similar areas with success.

yeah yule have to lock it up and/or use air. the bolt is going to be in the daggone tight. it'll make you think you broke something when it does come loose......then again, you just might. good luck -fuster-
