Hey guys,

Unfortunately I have a brand new dent in the front bumper. Not too bad but I just want to see how much you guys think it will cost to fix at the dealer since I have to take it to them tomorrow anyway.

They will probably say you need to buy a new one. Its pretty hard to bang out chrome w/o it cracking.

How much does a new one cost? All I need is the chrome section...nothing else.

I had a similar dent from a wreck and was able to carefully pound the dent out with a rubber mallet. In the sunlight if you look very close you can see where a 1 inch dent remains but you have to look for it to see it. Id same bang away, what can you lose but having buy a bumper like they want you to.

Heh..good call. defnitely try and bang it out yourself. But a dealer is just going to tell ya you need a new one.

Well TOR ran the part number for me and it came out to 281 with shipping. I think I will go ahead and see if I can't tap it out. What do you think a body shop could do for it? Would they be able to get it out w/o having to get a new one?

Take off the bumper, bang it out dude with a rubber mallet and let what you can still see serve as a reminder to pay closer attention from now on or shell out the dough and get a new one off Ebay.

How easy is it to take the bumper off? If I can get it off then I can easily bang it out...that may be my best bet. Would a Chilton's cover how to remove the bumper?

I just did this same thing today. I was parking and pulled in to far. I hit a landscaping/retaining wall that was sticking out. I don't know where my mind was but it sure was not paying attention.

Anyway, the bumper is real easy to take off. There are 6 nuts to take loose. One 10mm nut on either side where the fender meets the body. Note, the nut you want to remove is positioned verticle, not the horizontal one. You may need to pry the fender liner out of the way a bit to get to it.
The other 4 nuts to remove are the ones bolting the bumper to the bumper brackets. Note: don't unbolt the bumper bracket from the frame. Just climb under the truck, you will clearly see the 4 nuts, 2 on either side, that need to be removed.

After that I took a hammer to it. I had a rubber malet and a standard use hammer avaliable. If I was to do it again, I would have gotten another hammer with a broader head, because the standard made lots of ridges that I could not smooth out.

In the end, it looks better, but it is ovious it has been repaired. I say just go slow and you can make it look decent.

Hey Fink,

Old Timers Solution:

Saw my father do it this way;

He took the bumper off our Buick.
Laid it on a blanket on some soft grass.
Placed a piece of brass on the back side of the dent.
Knocked the dent out by hitting the brass.

Could not tell it had happemed.

That was years ago when chrome bumpers were heavy.

I would try to fix it, if you screw up then buy one on ebay.
