How much Power can be made N/A w/ 22re?

Hello All
New to these forums and have a few questions regarding my 93 pickup.
OK...
Just wondering how much power can be made w/ the stock ECU and all things involved w/ the stock efi?
What is the most power that can be had w/ stock throttle body and MAF in place?
Where is the most common upgrades to make power on 22re?

I know the questions are a bit ballparkish.

I'm looking to do a big rebuild here soon and just wondering what you have to say about the 22re's motor and EFI systems limitations stock and modified.

Thanks in Advance!!

With a cam, cone intake, header, and performace mufler you ca pull about 17-20 extra hp (very roughly). LC engineering has an upgrade kit that includes all that plus the throtle body with a cliamed 22-25 hp. If you really wan't some cheep hp get a $15 cone filter off ebay. It really makes a big diferance in throttle response and is by far the biggest hp increase per dollar you will find.

BAck when the 22RE was still being produced, some racing engines put out 350 horsepower. The 18RC block (I think it was) was used by Ivan Stewart, those were built up to more the 450 hp. But then they only have to run for a few hours between rebuilds....

Realistically about 145 hp is all you are going to get reliably, as was indicated above, but the driveability increase is HUGE. So is the mileage increase if driven sensibly. It will feel better than a 3.o and can get 22-23 mpg.

the stock ecu and fuel can handle 170 - 190 hp. I cant beleive people buy stuff from LC or DOA. ALOT of it can be done buy a decent machinist for a quarter of the cost. depends on what you want but a good build would be up the compression to 10.0, use some larger valves, a good midrange cam from Engnbldr (268ct), pacesetter header, 2-2.25 inch exhaust (depending if you want tq or hp), 82 supra MAF with a cone filter, MSD 6a box with a blaster coil, take out the a/c, and put on an electric fan. most of that combo, on unleaded+, got me 165hp at the flywheel. but once you put all that power through the drivetrain it is WAY less.

yeah i was actually talking to a mechanic in town that built race engines for celica's.

he showed me all sorts of little tricks, like making a balanced set of chevy 350 headers into a set of headers for our trucks, all sorts of stuff. real nice guy, me and a buddy are going back there this week to talk and hangout more,

oh, and he is turning a chrysler lebaron convertable into a boat, its friggin sweet,

back to the question though, he told me he once had a 210 horse 22re last a whole race season, and also said that his daughters car had a 175 horse motor in her d.d celica for about 3 years before they sold it.

so quite a bit if you can do the work.

why would anyone waste time making a 350 header fit...you could more easily build a custom one for the engine...

i think the max i've heard of is about 180hp N/A, but that was with dual side draft carbs. the 18RG came with about 150hp stock, more if you got it with the turbo or EFI. sadly, you can't swap the head onto a 20R/22R block, which is the main reason for its power(twin cam)

Hello All
Thankyou for all of the replies.
I'm interested in the Supra MAF conversion.
Is this a plug and play mod or do I need to go in and adjust the tension gear in the MAF to get the right voltage output for the ECU to read?

Just a little background on what I am looking for out of this truck and what is done to it now.

It's a 93 standard cab 4x4 w/ 222,000 miles on the 22re.

Current modds:
2.25 crimp bend cat back exhaust w/ Purple Hornet GlassPack.

K&N drop in filter w/ modded OEM air box (took out restictive elbow behind headlight and used a piece of 2.25 pipe and flared the end going into the cold air box behind headlight).

Breather for air recirculator.

Flex-a-lite toyota pickup electric fan conversion

NGK plugs (1 stage colder) NGK Wires

DOA timing chain kit

Power Stop slotted rotors

4" Trail Master lift w/ SSV Shocks and steering stabalizer

32"x 11.5" BFG A/T KO on 15x10 chrome rims (stock gears)

GTS vent visors

Sylvania Silver Star headlights + other small Misc. modds.

I use this truck to tow my race cars to the track, trash to the dump, some mild off-roading and during bad weather conditions I drive it to work (Heavy rain days and snow).

When towing 3,500lbs the truck preety much falls on it's face when ever there is a big hill or bridge to cross(Luckly not many of those around here). It'll do it just don't expect it to accelerate any.

I figure w/ some 4.56 gears F. and R. w/ a Detroit True Track in the rear and Power in the 140hp range w/ somewhere around 160 ft lbs of TQ. Should do.

What do Yall Think?
Will this be anuff?

Thanks again.

Put the gears in for starters. Assuming you have 4.10s, you'll see an honest to goodness 10% torque increase (at the wheels) w/ 4.56 gears. I would do that before anything else. Maybe even consider 4.88s if you have plans for 33s in the future. That'll give you 19% more torque. Also lets the engine get up into its torque/power band, max torque is around 2800 and falls off quickly below that.

Here's what I did to my 22RE:

Quite pleased with the performance increase.

well the reason for the Tuned 350 headers is because all the headers that are made right now suck balls.

if you use tuned 350 headers, just teh 1-3-5-7 not in that order, you can make it work better,

also , another good way to "make" a header is simply to hog out the stock manifold, and yadda yadda, to hard to explain without pics,

there is a celica with a 22re engine makeing 210 horespower in the tri-cities, ive seen the dyno sheets.

LC engineering sells superchargers for the 22R and possibly 22RE. B&M used to make a manifold for the 22R that'd fit one of their common blowers, but they're VERY rare nowadays. i saw one on ebay a year ago, should've bought it...
