How much oil is too much?

Just curious I know it sounds dumb, but just changed my oil tonight and by the dipstick, its a bit high. I put in the recommended 5.7 qts (probably a bit under that actually) ran it to op temp, then let it sit. Checked it, about an eighth inch over. Letting it sit for a long time brings the oil mark a bit more than a eighth over the line. I'm sure there was a bit of oil left over in there because I drained it probably an hour after I got home.

I know the harms of having too much oil, but just curious with these trucks how much is too much? There are no signs of anything weird like white smoke or what not, and like I said, i went by the book for the amount to put in.

You'll be fine like that, 5.5-6 qts is the right amount (6 if you're using the oversize filter). If you were reading a full qt. high, I'd say drain some, but I wouldn't even bother in your case - you won't be blowing any seals.

I've heard everything from 5.5 to 6.5 quarts.....I use 6 quarts w/ the V8 "D3" OEM filter. Always right at the top line.

See that's odd cause I put in 1qt of lucas and just a hair under 5 quarts and it still wasn't at the full mark.

You could always just drain the excess off by cracking opening the drain bolt to where it slowly drips into a drain pain. Although I don't think the 1/8 inch is going to be a problem, why take the chance?

On the Tacoma V6 5VZ, it takes 1.3qts to go from the low line to the high line... so if you fill to about 4.5qts, you can fill to the low line instead, and then adjust from there. Just remember you lose about 1/3 qt to the oil filter.

There must be some variation somewhere from engine to engine. I've always wondered why. Maybe it is because dip sticks made aren't accurate down to the level of 1/2-1/8 inch. My owners manual states 5.7 Q when the oil and filter is changed. However, at every oil change I add a full 6 quarts and I am consistently 1/8 inch below the "F" on the dip stick. This is a completely stock engine and OEM filter. I've posted on BITOG and found a lot of people have the same variation.

Anyway, I've heard that 1/8-1/2 quart up or down isn't a big deal.

I use the recommended sized filter (#3614) and add 6 quarts at every change. My dipstick reads right at full mark. When I change my filter between oil changes, it drops some, but not a lot. I'm running Schaffer 7000 oil FWIW and love it. I change filters at 3,500 miles, and do a complete oil change at 7,000.

Ha it seems like we have a comedian on the site. Legit question though, its not worth risking blowing any seals and ruining an engine because of oil. I put in the exact amount and have been putting in that much since I owned the truck. This is the first time it's read over the top. So to whoever changed the title of my thread thanks.

I use about 5.6 to 5.8 qts in mine and I end up even, but a lil over you'll be fine. Not is it conventional or Sythetic (Royal Purple 5w30 FTW!!)
