Ever since I got my 4Runner (2000 Limited V6), I was never able to fill it with more than 13.5 - 14 gallons at the pump. Consequently, I am only getting about 240-250 miles per tank. This is regardless of whether I drive on the freeway or i the city, and usually my driving consists of a mix of both.

I find this very odd for two reasons:

1. The manual states that the fuel tank capacity is 18 gallons.

2. I would expect the mileage to be at least 300 miles on a full tank, yet I have never gone more than 255 miles, and at that point the light has been on for about 20 miles. In fact, I have never owned a car (and I am on my 6th one) that has not been able to get at least 300 miles out of a tank.

Any ideas/input?

I could be wrong, but I don't think it is a TSB thing. The TSB I recall would have a much bigger error. I think that lots of 4runner show the gastank warning at about 4 gallons left in the tank. Basically it tells you to find a gas station sometime in the next 60miles in time to get you out of the trail and find gas. I try to drive my runner up to 300miles/tank (even with the light on) before filling up and I have only once been close to running out of gas

i only get like 220 miles ever and about 16mpg in a bone stock 99 v6 is that right i drive very easy and alot of highway

1999runner, maybe it is time to clean out the injectors or get a tuneup. Even at 16mpg you should go about 288miles before you actually runout.

well, my 4runner is a little different, but my CELICA has a good 100+ miles with the fuel warning light on. (i've done the math: put in 12 gallons the moment the light comes on, it's a 16 gallon tank, 4 gallons left at approximately 27 mpg = 100+). i've gotten to about 80 miles with the light on and i didn't dare go more. maybe the newer 4runners have something like that where the light comes on early too.

I get about 200-220...but thats with 33's and about 150 pounds of sound equipment and I'm usually hauling atleast 1 if not 2 or more people about 85% of the time.

I'm thinkin of getting a smaller car, maybe a Prelude or something similar to drive around on a day to day basis...but we'll see how the funds add up.

getting a prelude is possibly the smartest thing you could do for gas mileage.
i have a 1996 prelude S (slowest model) it gets around 350 to the tank ( i fill up at 310 or so) and that is with 140,000 mi. and no serious tune up ever since we've owned it. it is by far the most reliable car my family has ever come across.

If I was to run it dry (all 18.1 gallons), I figure a bit over 360 miles. I typically get 20-21 mpg driving hilly back roads to work and 22 mpg highway as long as I'm not playing "chicken" with anyone. I have a '00 3.4L auto w/stock size tires, deckplate and amsoil filter. I did not notice any increase in mpg with the deckplate nor when I switched to synthetic in the crankcase.

So far,when I fill up when the low level light comes on I'm still only able to squeeze about 15.5 gallons in so I'm right at 18mpg but I'm not complaining much.

I finally switched my cluster to the one with the low fuel light, and it still wouldn't come on...Even when down to less than two gallons left. I got 300 miles on that tank.

Prior to driving down to North Caroilina from Maryland I got approx 220 now I get about 280 or more. Guess she needed a blow out. I put a bottle of Lucas in the tank before I left. 89K so she aint even broken in yet, but I've only had her since Nov 2003.

I have a 96 v6 with about 120k and 225/75/r16 on it and can get about 300 miles per tank. With the 225/70/r16 stock tires I was getting around 21 to 22 on the highway.

I sold my '96 Prelude VTEC to get out of the ricer world and into 4-wheeling. With gas prices this high and the ˟˟˟˟ty milage of my truck, I wish I could go back. That car was pretty damn fast, and I got about 30mpg (if not higher) on the highway and about 22mpg around town. I actually had two of them, a '95 VTEC as well and, and the '95 had 110 with no tune-ups except the timing belt and it ran perfect. I'm talking NO TUNE UPS, and it ran very great. Long live Honda!! Oh yeah, and Toyota... hehe

I've pushed it to 320 once on the highway. Around town it's usually 240-275.

I could do that when I had the stock size tires and gears. with the 4.88's and 33's I can only make it a max of about 240 and that's sweating it.

240 tops here. I usually see about 220 when the light starts coming on.

my best ever was 425, but that was nearly bone dry, and on the way to AZ. and it was a bit off due to an incorrect speedo/odometer reading.

now with 33s and 4.88's its absolutely right on and im averaging 300-320 per tank.
but this is on my 2.7 5 speed.
