My tranny (auto) has begun to leak transmission fluid at the bell housing. Some of the guys who I work with have said that the seal on the torque converter is probably bad and that I should just do the work myself. I know I could get a friend to help drop the tranny but I am wondering how hard the rest of the job is. I have been told its not too bad, mostly just time consuming. Any suggestions from people who have already done this on a 94 auto 4WD (or similar)? Also, does this sound like it is probably the torque converter seal?

I've heard it isn't too bad also. There are a couple of bolts that you need to remove by braille on top of the tranny. Make sure you support the tranny well. It's heavy.

Don't know on the seal issue.

Never tried an auto, but the frist time I removed my 5 sp tranny it took a 4-5 hours. It's not too technical but there's quite a bit of work. The bolts at the top are fun to get at, best way is through the hole where the shifter is. And like Cebby said get a good jack, they're heavy with the tcase attached.

I have done three full swaps for auto to auto on 4runners....it is doable in the driveway if you have a lifted truck...stock height and lower makes it tough to get the tranny out from under the truck....too much lift and no tranny jack brings in back strain and a few days rest DRAIN THE FLUID BEFORE YOU START...

Also, when you take the torque converter out, you will spill fluid again if you arent careful. I've taken autos out of Chevy trucks but only manuals on imports. Good luck.
