i noticed a loud sort of ticking noice when driving a few days ago...it was just noticible with my foot on the gas, very loud with my foot off the gas. it was a ticking, clicking sort of sound that got faster as i went faster. it sounded like a tire rubbing at first, but i know that's not it. it pretty much went away when i slowed down to 15mph and under.

took it to my local shop, they determined the problem to be in the front differential. well, took that out, opened it up and the front diff is fine.

so my front diff is at the shop where i regeard a few months ago, i took it there because they know their stuff when it comes to differentials. my truck is at a local shop, front end all taken out.

so what could it possibly be? yes i know it's a somewhat vague internet description, but i'm looking for something here. the rear differential is supposedly fine, as is the driveshaft. the axles look good. i suspect possibly a bad wheel bearing, but wonder if this sort of problem sounds like it could be a wheel bearing. they're checking out the front end stuff minus the front diff at my local shop now again. this is real annoying and frustrating having an clear problem but no one to find where it's at. just thought i'd post on here to pass time while they check it out again.

drive down the road and move the wheel side to side. listen to hear if the sound comes and goes.

like i said above, the truck is apart now. so that would pretty much mean i can't drive it right now.
i'm so tired of this ˟˟˟˟. this truck is not ÅÅÅÅing worth all the trouble i've been going through lately.

Take the cards out of your spokes...

Lots of movin things up there to click...the question is does it still click w/ the front diff out? or have you driven it since then? A reputable mechanic should be able to find it.

Trucks break. You fix it.

U-joint? Generally, wheel brgs make more of a roaring noise when going bad. The noise normally changes by turning the steering wheel.

Bad wheel bearings usually give off a low pitched moan and sometimes quite loud, depending on how dry things have gotten.

Also, feel the wheel, both inside and out with your hand. Be careful. If the wheel is very hot to the touch, you may have found the one with the bad bearing. This technique can also help find bearings that are too tight.

yeah waskilly, trucks break. but this one has been breaking often lately. part of the game i know, but i can still vent and say it's annoying.

i can't drive it with the front diff out...ADD and such. we'll see what happens.

Mine made a thum-thum-thum noise when going about 25-40 on new asphalt. When I pulled the rear axle it was pretty wobbly in the brake backing plate. However, if you check by pulling your rear axle just be careful because there is a certain amount of wobble in a new bearing so it's kind of subjective.

not a rock, that was the first thing i checked. that'd be too simple.
not a tire rubbing.
not the front differential.
the sound is worse in 4wd.
checked U joints, they're fine. lubed driveshafts, and they seem fine.

CV joints in the front drive axles? They will click when worn. Are the boots all good or does one have a small rip. CV joints will usually click really bad when turning sharp

nah it happens when going straight. the CVs should be good. i only have 60,xxx miles and both CVs aren't even original, they've been replaced by newer ones. but something to check...

I have only experienced this in my old Nissan. I had a bearing go after I got my front axel replaced. I sounds like a low/base noise that follow the wheel speed, get louder and higher pitched the faster you go. First off it gave a scratchy metal sound, but just in the end before I had it repaired it sounded almost like a jet at 65mph. The only way to figure it out was by replacing (acc. to the mechanic).
