Exclamation Hole in Transfer Case!!!!!

This was the original thread

Well, I was getting a humming from under my vehicle and we decided to check the front differential. It was fine. However I had been having a leek from under my rig near this "hole" talked about in the original thread. I checked the transmition fluid a while back and discovered that it was low, so I topped it off with conditioner and stop leak. The weepeing soon stopped but the whining started. Well I checked my transfer case and it was a quart low. After topping it off I drove it. No more hum, but when I got back the hole was flowing out fluid. Yes, it was from the hole.

What is the hole!?!?!?

I need to know because it is causing a problem and I am in need of plugging it. Can I do this?

I'm not sure if you read it or not in the other thread. But I went to the dealership and had the parts guy bring up the parts diagram for the transfer case. There isn't anything that is supposed to go in that hole. So I don't know why it is there or why it leaks.

I'm probably going to be up there again tomorrow so I'll ask my service guy and see if he knows anything about it.

I'll let you know what I find out.

I took the pic of the hole to my service guy. His main tech wasn't in today so he is going to ask him tomorrow. When he calls me I'll ask him if you can plug it.

I have noticed a very small fluid leak from that hole on mine too. I have no drips on the garage floor under the truck but there is always one little drop of fluid from that hole stuck to the bottom of the transfer case. My guess is that there is a seal that is leaking when the truck is in gear and as soon as I park it the leak stops. It worries me too. My guess is that it is a breather hole for the case but that is just a guess. If it is a breather hole I wouldn't plug it or air pressure could blow the case apart. Ask me how I know about that!

That is why I don't want to plug it until I know better. But it *is* leaking and that needs to stop. have you checked the level of fluid in your transfer case?

Yes the level was fine on mine. So yours was about a quart low. That's a lot! Mine only holds 0.8 quart. I have the A340H transfer for the 3VZ-E A/T. Mine takes ATF is that what you put in?

ATF in the Transfer case? That sounds strange. Mine was just Dexron II (which is now only Dexron III). It will hold 3.75 quarts.

Dexron II is ATF. Are talking about the transfer case or the transmission? What transmission do you have?

1995 3.0L 4x4 AT Limited 4Runner w/ tow package.

I thought Dexron III and ATF were different types of transmision fluid? Yes, I am talking about the transfer case. I had to pump it into the fill hole on the backside of the transfer case until it started to overflow.

Oh, ok I guess the 95 4-runners are different than the 93 trucks. Mine looks just like that picture.

Dexron II and Dexron III are types of ATF (automatic transmission fluid)

Yeah but if it calls for Dexron II or III can you use regular ATF? I didn't think you could.

I guess that depends on what you consider regular ATF. I far as I know (and that may not be too far) any ATF on the store shelf is up to Dexron II requirements. Dexron III meets Dexron II requirements, however the reverse is not true. Dexron II is like so crappy they don't even sell it anymore do they?

Anyway I hope we are not getting too far off the subject because I too would really like to know why we are having fluid leak out that hole.

I really do not know for sure. I try to not mess with automatics. I think Theif on the Wire has a good theory though. A seal that keeps the tranny fluid from overfilling the transfer may have failed and that hole is a failsafe so the transfer dosen't overfill.

Watch your tranny fluid level closley. Maybe some of that ultraviolet dye stuff would help find the source. Put the dye in the tranny and if it comes out the hole in your transfer you have found the problem.

hmmmmmm..... Some more insight, but not quite the answer yet. We need to get to the bottom of this one. I am going to do some more searching myself. Hopefully our guy from yotatech will respond soon, too. Thanks for the update, though!!!!
