High RPM Rattle
I just picked up an 86 4x4 for a steal. I replaced the clutch, did a tune up, changed belts etc. The truck runs well but I have noticed one thing. When going through the gears at a high rpm before shifting to the next there is a very noticeable rattle. I haven't noticed it in 4th or 5th as I haven't taken it above 65. Also when in third it usually starts doing it between 35 - 40mph, but when going up a decent hill at the same speed it doesn't. Last thing when in neutral and gassing it it will rattle to some extent, but its when I'm really rev'ing the motor. Any suggestions?

Does it rattle at start-up at all?
Worst case scenario is timing chain guides. Best case scenario is an exhaust heat shield(s). I would start cheap first. Get under the truck and bang around the exhaust with a rubber mallet. Look for loose fittings and listen for sounds.
That should be a good start.
Just so you know, the 22re has plastic timing chain guides that are prone to fail.
I am assuming that is what you have anyway.
There are other things...but let's start there.

No, it's a definite rattle noise, not a ping. To steal someone elses description I saw, like a ball bearing in a coke can.
