High Flow Cat Converter?

Has anyone put on an aftermarket, high flow cat converter for their 3rd gen 3.4L runner or taco and seen noticeable gas mileage improove ments?

would appreciate any feedback or comments! thinking about doing that and a muffler to improove mileage.. and i think my converter's due soon anyway.

you already have a "high flow" honeycomb style converter on it now, unless its clogged or not working right, you wont see a improvement

This is true. 98% of the high flow cats out there are high flow compared to O.E. but not by much. As joe said... you will not see an improvement.

I disagree.

I put a high flo cat on my WRX. Well I removed 2 cats and made the 3rd a high flo. But I drove it with a regular cat before I put it on.

I didnt notice any MPG change but I wasnt keeping a tight record. I did however feel ALOT faster turbo spool an a noticable amount of power high and low end. It also made the exhaust noticible louder.

Of course exhaust modification on a turbo charged car are felt alot more so then an N/A vehicle. And I dont know if maybe Subaru makes a cheaper cat then Toyota so I felt it.

Regardless I did feel an increase in power and the exhaust note was about the same but louder. I also still passed emissions, and the high flo was less expensive then a OEM replacment.

Hey Born - what makes you think your cat is about to give up?

I only ask because I was wondering if mine was going out - I have a 96 4R 3.4 and every once in a while I get this sort of sulfurous rotten egg smell. Not all the time, just sometimes, but it never did it before. (No, its nothing I ate!)

You answered your own post. Turbocharged cars can make loads of power by opening up the exhaust system.

The rotten egg smell is most likely your cat. They do that when the brick will start melting. You may want to get under your truck and knock on the cat as well. If you hear the brick rattling inside of it then you know for sure it is time to change it.

I'm waiting to hear back from Corey about advertising but if all goes well then I should be able to give all the yotatech members discounts on exhaust products(including cats) from my website.

OBDI was where it was at;I ran just a race pipe on my Eclipse and gained over a tenth in the 1/4 mile consistently without it but new cars can't run with out them and not throw a CEL.

I'm with driver on that one. I scrapped my exhaust and put on a high flow cat from "catco" on my 02 x-cab and noticed a better sounnd coming out my duals and a slightly noticable seat o' the pants improvement, however, I throw a CEL everytime I drive over 60 mph.

judging by your name... I am assuming you drove a gsx. Once again... it is a turbo car... you can gain loads of power by freeing up your exhaust on turbo cars.

I do not think BornChaos is wanting to switch his whole exhaust... it sounds like he was just referring to gaining power from swapping the cat. Will you gain power if you put on a high flow cat? Probably. Will it be a noticible difference? Very doubtfully.

I didnt ask a question to be answered. I said you could feel it more. A free-er flowing exhaust on a turbocharged car makes alot more power then a free-er flowing exhaust on an N/A vehicle.

Never the less, if it gives you more power on turbocharged car it will give you an increase on a N/A vehicle, just not as much. Most likely not even a noticable amount, at least from the butt dyno.

Same goes with displacment. A vehicle with a larger engine will benefit more from a free-er flowing exhaust then a smaller engine.

I was just kind of explaining that, and my experience with a high flow cat. But thanks for agreeing?
