HID"s & Frosted Headlights?

Lately I have been thinking of what to get next for the 3rd gen with my next paycheck, and one of the ideas of an HID kit came to my head. Would the HID's with the frosted headlights work ok? I have not decided if I'm going with HID's or not, I just need an idea why and why not it wouldn't work. Thanks guys

VL:

HIDs with the pre 99(frosted)housings will not work well. You'll need to upgrade to the 99+ housings first to be effective.

I completely Disagree. I had a 4runner with the 2000+ headlight assemblies, until someone ran a red light and totaled her, so I got another 96, but don't have the money to put in the 99+ headlamps, but I pulled my HID's out of my totalled vehicle and they work Great in the pre 99's.

Just my 2 cents.

I know it's your .02

But I seriously doubt they are better. If they are, then you would be the first and would go against every HID forum and expert. The older style housing scatter the beam too much and don't have as good cut off. The free form(99+) versus the parabolic(pre 99) are no comparison on performance. But maybe after 2 years of dealing with HIDs I could be wrong.....

Of course, both types are not even close to OEM projectors but that's a completely different story.

Anyway...check the following links for the results and any answers to your questions.

Hopefully this should help

Actually, I think the fluted headlights might be better than the reflector ones in terms of beam pattern. I had my reflector ones out to paint them and do those repairs a long time ago, so I had my old headlights installed, and they seemed to have a better beam pattern. I think the glare was a little worse though. The glare was pretty bad with the reflectors as well, but some of that has been cured since I painted the headlights black.

Those were my observations as well, it seemed that the older style Headlamps, have more of a precise/controlled beam pattern.

All I am saying is that I don't feel it's necessary to ugrade to 99+ headlamps, to use HID kits effectively.

I would have to agree with the 96-98(frosted) headlights. They don't glare oncoming traffic as much and still perform well with a well defined beam pattern.
