hey jay a couple of ?'s

i have noticed a loss of mpg , lately . the only thing thta has changed really is i put on a canopy instead of my fiberglass tonneau cover.
could this loss of mpg be from the additive added during the winter months ?
its about a 2 mpg drop.
i havent cleaned my k and n filter with the cleaner stuff , but have knocked out the loose dirt and dust every couple of months .
my driving habits havent changed much either really , other then driving a bit farther to work and on the freeway most of the time .
could this be a sign of pending doom on my engine ?
possibly fuel filter, spark plug wires or plugs fouling ?
any suggestions would be great.

also , i was looking at the plug locations on my 3.4 liter and they look like a pain in the a$$ to replace plugs and wires ? is this something i should attepmt on my own ( im fairly mechanically inclined) and what suggestion would you use for plugs and wires ? i was thinking about spending the extra cash for the jacobs wires ?

thanks

erik b of oregon

Yes, the loss in gas mileage can be blamed on the winter fuel we use here in Oregon.

The plugs are rather simple to replace. I only recommend factory components. I wouldnt even mess with the wires until there was a problem or they were 10 years old.

Page 7 Emission Sub Systems

Oxygenated Fuels
As a result of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the use of oxygenated and reformulated fuels as already occured in many metropolitan accross the United States. Oxygenated gasoline contains oxygen carrying compunds (usually ethanol or MTBE) that chemically enleans the AT mixture. This leaner AT mixture results in lower cabon monoxide (CO) emissions from the tailpipe.

A few points require clarification concerning oxygenated fuels. First, late model feedback control vehicles may see a slight fuel economy loss (around 2%) when using oxygenated fuels. This occurs as a result of the feedback system enrichening the mixture when the O2 sensor detects the additional oxygen provided my the fuel. Second, blah blah.....blah
