Help...where to connect OBD-II code reader

The check engine light glowing bright on my 2000 4Runner. Of course the dealer wants $125 to read the code, so I'd like to trouble shoot the issue at home.

Bought a "Creader", which was recommend on Yotatech, for generic OBD-II vehilcles to read the error code(s). Packaging states for "use on all models since 1996 with a 16-pin diagnostic socket". Tryed to plug it into the Toyota "Diagnosis" plug in the engine compartment, located above the drivers side spark plugs, but the plug types are different and will not connect.

Is there a different place to attach the code reader?

Did I just buy the wrong code reader?

Do you have a recommendation for a replacement code reader?

Thank you for any insight and input offered.

The spot that you plug it into should be under the dash. All obd 2 plugs are the same so yes you did get the right one.

Time to clean your MAF..... might as well, clean your throttle body and IAC valve(short cut way)...If you take the intake boot off anyway..

Lots of info about both...do a search
