help with toy purchase
I'm looking for an older toyota to build as a project truck doesn't have to be strictly for rock crawling just off road. I have a friend who is selling his 87(I think) turbo for 2800. the motor and tranny are rebuilt with about 8k truck is stock but mechanically sound. what do you guys think? also I've read alot about sas and am considering the mod, would I be better to find an 85. one more dilema, I really like the 89-94's what are the pros and cons of these versus the mid to late 80's trucks? any info would be helpful?

A rell running turbo IFS truck for $2800 is not a bad deal but if you can find a good 85 for that price deffinatly snatch it up. That was the last year they had srtaight front axles.

Turbos make more power, but if they break they are more expensive to fix, because of their rarity.
85's are the best year for solid axle trucks because of their EFI engines.
The 89-94 trucks at one point no longer have locking front hubs (I think after 92). Manual hubs are good for lifting, because you can unlock them during road travel, which puts less strain on the CV joints.
If you are strictly going for a trail truck, something you can wheel, I say go old. Go 80's. Toyotas are going to last no matter what, and with older trucks, you don't have to worry quite so much about dents and scratches, less so than with a newer looking truck. Also, older trucks, you can pick up for less, which gives you more mod money.
If you can find a 1st gen, you can make them a good wheeling truck relatively easily, however, they are becoming hard to find, in good shape. I would scout around autotrader in your general area, see what else you can find. An 87 should be about $2000, less or more depending on exterior/engine condition. Good luck!
