HELP!!! problems no one knows

Hi guys i am new to this fourm i went and was serching for ones ever sicne my trucks tranny i THINK started messin up. The truck is a 91 Automatic 2.2L i belive, it has no model name i dont think of (you guys probly knwo it)

As for the problem itseems as when i try to go from a dead stop that it just dosnt wantto move. Now it is a automatic but its like trying to start a stick in about 3rd gear. I have to downshift it into low and then work it back up to drive. Me and my father were thinking it might as well be the overdrive sticking. We took it too two tranny places they still havcnt told us what kind it is (if you guys know that would be greaT) and there machinces detech nothing. One guy though that it might as well be electrial the other said it was and was internal. so needless to say we have NO clue what is wrong.

A few questiosn would be 1.) Would anyone have a clue what is wrong here. 2.) If it dose need to be repalced are therre other options that i can go sicne i was estimated about 1600+ for a rebuild and/or a replacement. 3.) Are there any others transmissions that it can be replaced with. I heard that jeep makes a tranny that is able to repalce with them (i could be mistaken) Please please please help me i am in all confusion i love this little truck and its jsut causing me so many heradaches.

My aim screen anme is: Psychox669
email is joe.zebrook@verizon.net

Sorry for the lost post thansk you for any help

Welcome to the forum.

I'll take a stab as to what your problems are. If you auto is anything like the autos for the V6s, it has shift solenoids in it. It sounds like this is your problem.

Check out this thread. Read the first response by Babypig. It sounds like it is exactly what you are experiencing.

BTW, if you have the 4cylinder (and I'm guessing you do), is a 22re.

Welcome again and I hope you get it fixed.

Hey,

First off I would check the fluid in the trans. Sounds simple I know but it's amazing how the little things get overlooked, not too say that you have overlooked anything, just doesn't hurt to doulble check. It does sound like a solenoid. I seem to have had every transmission problem knon to man since i've had my truck but the solenoids are very simple to change. definitley try pulling the codes first too, as you don't want to spend a lot of money for something that isn't the problem. Let us know what code you pull and we'll go from there.

I had a nasty problem on my 4runner for a while: After a stop, it would just rev and then eventually spin the wheels. I had the tranny fluid replaced witha a t-tech system, and no more problems.

Toyota is the best place to get the solenoids. Pull the codes to see which one it is. They run about 250 or so each, so you want to get the right one the first time out. My number 1 solenoid was $306.00 out the door. Let us know what code you get. And where are you located?

You should definately do a tranny flush as was mentioned before (not just a drain and fill the pan). Then take it out and see how it does. If you are still having problems then you should start to look at the shift solenoids.

This is a great document for troubleshooting your tranny.

I have to agree with MTL. ATF does not last a lifetime like some people like to think. Flush the tranny and go from there. If you have never done it, you probably need to anyway.
