For a while now my 99 4runner sr5 v6 has been makin a wierd noise from under the hood. I never knew what it was, I thught it was normal. So yesterday I looked under the hood while it was ideling and noticed the crankshaft pulley wobbelin pretty bad.. So I tried to tighten it and it seems tight.. SO the things I know ( about 2 months ago I replaced all 3 belts, at 65000 the timing belt was changed. ). Please give me any advice or knowledge of what i can do. Thanks guys :cry:

I had this problem when I took in my truck to Lakeside Toyota of New Orleans to get my water pump changed and some other stuff. The mechanic did not get the key in the slot for the pulley when he put it back on. My pulley started wobbling on my drive home from school all the way back to Columbia SC. The belts kept coming off every 60 mi. At least I had some tools to get it back on tight but it would keep coming loose and the belts would fall off. Needless to say, it made for an extremely long trip back home. Once, I got home I had a good mechanic put it back together with a new pulley and key. Never had any problems again even though the loose key scratched deeply into the crankshaft. I think as long as you got the pulley back on correctly and the key did not come out of the slot, you should not have any problems. I have gone about 70k mi without a problem since.

I was wondering what that pulley and key cost you? I called a couple shops and they said i shoul be able to do this job myself. so i think ill try replacing this first and hopefully it solves the problem.. thanks alot.

That crank pulley bolt is on there TIGHT so you either need:
1) a hefty impact gun or
2) a 24" strap/chain wrench and a ratchet with a 2-3' cheater bar on it

Although in your case who knows how loose or tight it actually is.
In any case, you definately need to take it off and inspect.

I had the identical thing happen on my 86 22RE. The bonehead who sold me the truck had replaced the front seal and had taken off the pulley. When he put it back on, it didn't get it seated right, and I had the exact same issue untill I figured it out and replaced the pulley and key. (I didn't ncessarily have to, but I did anyway to be sure.) I'd give that a try first to see if that's the deal.

Maybe a stupid question, but can anyone tell me what SIZE the bloody key is?? I can't find it anywhere...
Length is not so muchan issue as WIDTH...I measured the keyway at .095". Is this correct? The closest I've found online for keystock is 3/32", which comes out to .09378". Is this right, or is it a specialty item I need to order? If so, from where?

The key should be a metric size (likely a 2.5 mm width).
Did the dealer not have this item?

id go to a good hardware store (Not a lowes/HD) they should have a whole selection of keys there.

Thanks for the links. I checked the FSM for my year/model and it specs 116 ft/lbs. I plan on sticking some red Locktite on it too. I'll do the 5% reduction for the threads being lubed. My biggest problem is the size of the keystock required for the keyway, but I can go to a farm supply company here in town with the harmonic in hand and check it that way. I hope they have metric .

No Toyota stealership in my town, sadly. Klammath Falls isn't all that big I quess :pat:

it's an '87 with a 22RE in it Just slightly old-school. Sorry for the confusion. That's why I stuck all that info in my sig tho, to try and prevent this sort of confusion. Sorry about the misconception.
