Help! my automatic trany jumps outa gear under hard acceleration.

Help! my automatic trany jumps outa gear under hard acceleration.

I have a 1990 V-6 extended cab automatic 4x4. The truck has a 4" suspension with a 3" body rolling on 37" tires.

My problem is when I am at a standstill (waiting for the light to turn green) and I start to accelerate quickly the automatic transmission will jump out of drive and into neutral. If I baby it and take off slow the problem does not occur.

I replaced the motor mounts (which were bad) and transmission mount. I figured the motor was twisting because of the bad mounts and was causing the tranny to twist excessively, yet the problem still occurs. I am getting ready to order front and rear u-joints as well as a new rear carrier bearing.

I have contemplated disconnecting the shift linkage with the truck in drive to see if that is the problem, and have wondered if maybe the automatic shifter indentations may be worn.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Help a Toyota brother out

did you extend the shifter shaft? if not, it may be impacting the edge of the opening under the shift boot causing it to pop out of 'd' when you accelerate quickly.

Update: I crawled underneath the truck and determined that the four factory rubber body mounts at each corner of the cab were all dry rotted and cracked.

I ordered the Energy Suspension replacements which should be here in 5 days.

I also spoke with a buddy whom is a Toyota technician and he suggested that I start the truck, engage the parking brake, shift the automatic in drive and he will manually disengage the shift linkage. Once this is done the idea is to give it gas and see if it still jumps out of gear if so then it is not the shift linkage. If not my quest continues.

Hopefully the new mounts will fix my problem.

One last question. How hard is it to install body mounts? kinda curious because the shop wants $330.00 to do the work. Seems kinda steep to me but I have no experience with Body mounts.

I bought the truck with the suspension and lift kit allready installed. Both kits are Trailmaster, so I have no idea. I suppose I will find out soon. Hopefully sooner than later.

welcome to the wonderful world of #1 or #2 shift solenoids. One of these is probably going out on you. Just pull the trouble codes and see if the o/d light flashes. Count the flashes and that will tell you if they are going.

UPDATE........

I crawled underneath the truck this weekend, found the linkage and it was adjusted all the way to the rear. I loosened the bolts and slid it forward a 1/2 inch, tightened the bolts and took it out for a test drive......

Voila! no more tranny jumping out of gear. The sad things is Toyota was not able to figure it out, but my newly discovered website mechanics supplied the fix. Thanks, I really appreciate the input from everyone.

Yep, proper adjustment of the shifters (manual or automatic) is important after installing a body lift:

New body mounts are relatively easy to install, basically the same basic steps as a body lift, see page above for details. You may have trouble with the small bolts that hold the 4 rear mounts in place.
