HELP! HELP! HELP! Another Problem!! (Cams)
OK - My sisters '92 SR5 JUST got a damn re-built motor in it as some of you may remember me posting that like 2 months ago.
NOW - she lost overdrive and this is the exact words from her new estimate at Japanese Motorworks INC. in Athens, GA.
VEHICLE PROBLEM:
Diagnose no shift 60-70 mph. After 4000 RPM was low on atf. Reman engine was put in 3500 miles ago. Cousin said engine not bolted in. Customer will try to supply vehicle history.
--Shims (12) $165.00
--Cam #1 (1) $427.13
--Cam #2 (1) $427.13
-------------------------------------------------------------
Labor Description
Est. - Found: No overdrive/4th gear upshift. Possible cause in order of likelihood: Electrical/wiring failure. TSB #TC92002R adresses harness failure under intake manifold. Open circuit in ECT to TCM is next possible cause. Failed O.D. Solenoid is next possible failure. Internal transmission failure is least likely yet possible.
Est. - Inspection: engine replacement: Scope shows #2 and #6 cylinders not contributing on power balance test. Top end is very noisy. Valve clearance inspection and correction is 1st course of action for remedy of these 2 problems. All connections and fasteners appear to be in place upon cursory inspection. Customer states 2 quarts of oil consumed in 2800 miles.
Est. - Test overdrive malfunction NOTE ADDITIONAL PARTS AND LABOR MAY BE NEEDED. Test solenoids for command status. None given for 4th gear command override. All inputs for trans 4th operation as designed. Conclusion: TCM/PCM failure is the cause of 4th gear non-engagment. Trans shifts normally otherwise.
Est. - Inspect and adjust valve clearance. NOTE ADDITIONAL PARTS AND LABOR MAY BE NEEDED. Note: B2 camshaft has lobe failure on cylinder #4 exhaust valve assembly. Valve clearance on 3 of 12 valves out of spec (too loose on #4 exhaust, and too tight on #2 and #6 exhaust.) The noise from the valve train is a result of worn cam lobes on both camshafts.
Est. - Renew Cams
PARTS TOTAL - $1,019.26
LABOR TOTAL - $864.24
SHOP SUPPLIES - $18.84
SUB TOTAL - $1,902.34
GRAND TOTAL - $1,944.11
ANYONE W/ ANY HELP please let me know - what else can be done? That's WAY too much $$ ON A RE-BUILT motor w/ under 3500 miles. Suggestions?

Another cause for failing to shift into 4th is a faulty engine coolant temp sensor. The ECU is designed not to shift into 4th until the coolant temp reaches a certain temp. If it never reaches that per the sensor it will not command the tranny to shift into 4th.
If you see lobs wearing off of the cam the first thing I would suspect is a lubrication failure. This is what happened on the MB 380 engines until MB came up with a simple fix.

Hey Maxima, you running a SC or Turbo? Ever spend any time over at Maxima.org? I used to hang there all the time when we had our 92SE.
