Help Harmonic Balancer
Quick, someone out there must have an extra motor laying around or something. I need a harmonic balancer asap. Does anyone know if aftermarket billet or chrome ones are available? I can't drive my runner till I get a new one. E-mail me directly if you wanna sell yours. koyota93@yahoo.com
thanks

What happened to it?
It is not actually a harmonic balancer and Gadget diligently pointed out. It is only an inertia ring which keeps the accessories from absorbing too much vibration but some have run a billet pulley with no problems at all. Unless you have a junkyard locally which has one from a Tacoma or 4runner 3.4 then the only billet ones they sell I think are the underdrive verions.
Here's a link where they sell the pulley you need:

Thanks guys. I was able to get one from a local salvage yard for a $100, a lot better than $300 from the dealer. You wondered what happened to mine right. When my mechanic changed my timing belt, he didn't have access to an impact gun to tighten the bolt down. When you use just a normal wrench to tighten it, it will actually cause the will engine to turn, so you definitely need an impact. Anyways it came loose and it warped the inside of the pulley, where the keyway is. So it keeps loosening up, because it no longer has a tight fit. The one is on and my truck runs great. I really appreciate all the help and thanks again.

an impact will still allow the engine to turn. you have to hold the pully in place with a chain wrench, and torque to 116 ft.lbs. of torque. at least that is what the 22r takes. if you have a manual, putting the truck in 5th will also work.

I can't believe you have a mechanic who doesn't have impact tools!
Well, glad you got it fixed!

This happens a lot from improper installation and torque of the pulley bolt. There is a special pulley holding tool available from OTC tools that is specifically for this job. That pulley bolt needs to be tightened to 250 NM of torque. If that was not done then the job was not done properly and the mechanic that did it should be held responcible for the work.
Now the sad thing is that more then just the pulley was damaged. You bet the crankshaft was also damaged and there have been several engines that needed to be replaced because of this very problem.
