Help finding 4.56 thirds
Hey guys,
I've read this forum for a while and got some really good information. Well, I've decided to re-gear and I've decided just to find some 3rd members that are already set up. If anyone knows a good place to find a pair -- one 7.5" IFS diff and one 8" diff, I'd appreciate the help. I'm in Tulsa, OK

Nathan, the 4:56 gear ratio is relatively easy to find, it was standard eqp on 2nd gens with the V6, 5spd that came factory with 31" tires. Check your local wrecking yard, if you do a search on YT you'll find some yards that will ship and offer pretty good prices. Also if you do a search there is a link to a site that will give the low down on the gear codes on the sticker in the drivers door just in case you decide to peruse your local junk yard, I'm pretty sure it is G254 for the 4:56 gears. And if you're still looking in a couple of months when I regear and lock mine then I'll give you a deal on the set from my 4runner. But most of all, Welcome to Yotatech!

Thanks Goldrunner,
I called several yards here around Tulsa, and surprisingly enough they seemed to have plenty of 4.88s but no 4.56s. I'll keep trying and look around some more. Also, what's a good price to pay for a couple of thirds? Thanks

Hey Outdoor, at least you're down there, go for it, hopefully there will be enough to go around. I notice you have the uniden CB, how did you mount it? does it fit in the dash space below the radio?

Well, every place I call seems to think the 4.88s are special and want like $250 for each diff. That is too high for me, as there is no telling what sort of condition they are in. I called a local shop that quoted me 250 to set up gears in the front and rear. I figure I could get some new gears and pay to have them set up for a $100 or so more than I can get used 4.88 diffs from the junkyard. I'm pretty sure I want to go with 4.56 since I have 31" tires right now and I don't think I want any more than a 32". Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something if I keep looking.

Sounds like new gears are the way to go, while your at it you should have them throw in a locker, it they are going to pull the thirds apart for new gears why not go all the way!

no it doesnt fit in the space below. I ended up mounting it below my glove compartment. I like it there, and its really not in the way since no one sits there.

Goldrunner-
Heck yeah, even if I just find some thirds to buy and swap them out, I'm gonna get a locker! I can't think of a reason not to. I'm thinking lockrite; it's cheap and people seem to like it. Also Kyle's right here in Tulsa, maybe I could coerce him into helping me.

You should, he sounds like he needs the company! I was considering the lockrite, it's such a good price, but I drive in the snow a lot during the winter so I think I'm going to save up and try and do the e-locker conversion.
Kyle, thanks for the info on the Uniden, fortunately my GF is very short so she shouldnt have any problems with the CB under the dash.

lol to both of you. I guess I need company? lol preferably female in the passenger seat but whatever.
Nathan, I'd be more than happy to help you with the install. After doing it twice in one after noon, I think I could do it with my eyes closed. btw, check out the post in 'off roading planning'. we have a trip scheduled for the 18th of september. check it out.
hey goldy, no problem. yea thats nice. i mean I even have big feet, kinda short but i sat in the passenger seat just to get an idea, and unless the person has size 12 work boot, there is not a problem. If there is, just unmount it for the rirde. I didnt like it when i saw pictures of it in the area, but when i put it in, there is no better place, and it really does look clean.
btw, we get snow here about every 500 ice yrs. its nothing major here but if i go north it might be a problem. i figured i would cross that bridge when it comes. it only engages when the gas is applied, so i will just coast lol or so I think I have it planned out.

Hey outdoor, I didnt mean anything by the comment, but a girl in the passenger seat would be optimum! I drive up to Tahoe in the winter for boarding, sometimes in pretty hairy conditions so having a part-time locker would be perfect. However my wallet may not agree.

haha matt no harm done. and your right! a girl in the passenger seat would be nice, of course i wouldnt know!! yea i hear you on the optional locker. we get snow here very rarely, and like i said unless going up hill or something it shouldnt be a problem on icy roads. i guess i will find out in december, january or february huh. save the money. these lockers are awesome. I am wondering why i didnt add this first thing. incredible. gl
