help, check engine light on

alright, i'm pretty mechanical and good at fixing anything i can see or find

anyways today the check engine light came on...there was no difference in engine tone, no difference in driving, i checked under the hood for loose wires/hoses...nothing

how do i get the code to look up what is tripping the light, is there a light sequence to look for when i start it..or do i have to take it to a shop.
and can just any repair shop diagnose it, or does it have to goto a toyota dealer? (god i hope not)

but i've got a 4 hour tow coming up this friday, so i'd really prefer not to let it go and just hope for the best...for my own piece of mind i really wana find out what it is....even if it is something stupid.

2 weeks ago i put an aftermarket exhaust on...cat back, well not exactly cat back, but close...i didn't touch the pipe w/the 2nd O2 sensor...is there any way the new muffler fouled the O2 sensor..or something weird like that?

please help!

Autozone and stores like em will pull the code for free. Just drive on by...takes about 20 seconds.

If it is a 1995 or older you can't use OBD II code readers on the vehicle. You need to use the old jumperwire and watch the CEL method for that type of vehicle. It will depend on when the truck was manufactured and what model (the tacomas had OBD II a year earlier than 4runners) so look under the dash and see what connector you have (square connector is OBD I.....trapezoidal connector is OBD II).
