Help with bouncy/wobbly 96' Runner ride!

Howdy Folks,

I recently picked up a well used 2WD 1996 4Runner. At lower speeds the ride is ok. However, at higher speeds I can feel a vehicle shimmy, as well as, steering wheel shimmy. I suspect that this vehicle has the original shocks and springs and I think that I would like so start with replacing them.

Can someone please recommend good replacement OEM springs and shocks and a location to buy said stuff? I'm driving this car on Houston city streets (which suck) and I just want a decent factory-like ride I guess.

Phase two: Is to get some tire replacements for the tires that are undoubtly one of the culprits in my shimmying wobbly ride. There is a place in Houston that refurbishes the classic brushed aluminum wheels for 4runners (I have the steel rims). Can you guys please recommend a set of tires to go on these rims?

Phase three: Can someone identify additional causes for the crummy ride of the vehicle? Some things that I can replace that I'm sure need to be replaced that are just worn out after 165,000 miles that's on this vehicle?

Thanks Very Very Much for any and all suggestions!!!

G

Thanks for the suggestion Buhundred. I'm not really wanting a system that lifts the vehicle by 2". Do you any other suggestions/sources for OEM?

Thanks Again,

G

I'd just start with at least getting the tires balanced. If they are worn the replace them. I'm sure that this will fix most of your issues.

I already balanced and rotated the tires. Plus, I did an all wheel alignment. I think the tires are shot because the shocks and springs are likely worn out. They look like the original coils and shocks to me.

Thanks!

Not sure. I don't have the vernacular. Can you please take the time to explain this adaptor?

Thanks Again, I appreciate the fast responses.

Wow! Good article. Thanks much! These shocks and springs you recommended; are there any other suggestions that are little less expensive?
