which headlight bulb to use

Hey guys I want to upgrade my 99 4rnr headlight bulbs because I can't afford HID. Not exaxtly looking for bling but I want something better than my previous silverstars in my 97 rnr. They were ok, but they washed out in snow and especially rain. I want something new and efficent that wont wash out in bad weather.Any suggestions Thanks

Do not get Sylvania Silverstars. You'll be checking your lights constantly on dark rainy nights to see if they are actually on, I know I do.

Other than that, I love the bulbs, been running them for about 2 years now. They look good, nice and white, and are very bright in the clear night.

But once again, many will agree, they are horrible on rainy nights.

Also, run a search for this topic, as it has been beaten to death.

I searched last night and most yota techs were only talking about how GOOD they looked and not exactly the performance. I too like good looking bulbs but I drive at night alot and it sucks having to drive with so-so lighting from my stock bulbs.

Sounds good I did hear see alot of that in the search(roger brown). I was also thinking about adding driving lights to get even more visibility. Anyone know any good driving lights that would compliment some nighthawks.

got a front bumper or is it stock?

are you fixin to use it every night or just when wheeling?

For small lights, get a pair of PIAA 2100s

for big, go with hella 500s.

I would second the vote for GE Nighthawks. They're not blue or ultra white, but have the best, most effective aftermarket beam I've seen. They run about $25 a pair at Walmart and are way better than the Silver Stars or any ebay crap.

if price is not a factor and bling is..go with the PIAA 520s. I had those and it looked nice. If you want cheap yet effective...get the Hella 500s. If you just want a rediculous amt of ligiht, get lightforces.

i use my hella 500 fogs on the road when its really dark. i hate the output of the stock headlights, but when i put silverstars in i felt it was a dramatic improvement.

Yeah, I did like my silverstars but they bulbs have short expiration. BUT I only liked them in the dark with good visibility, once rain or fog comes in they suck.

I have Silverstars and I just recently installed Nighthawks in my mom's '99 Runner and side by side the Silverstars are more white but their light output on dry roads was nearly the same but on wet roads the Nighthawks more yellow light output showed up better. I guess once my Silverstars burn out (15 months so far) I'll go with the Nighthawks.

BTW,the Silverstar H3 bulbs in the fogs were definetly a big improvement over stock so those will be staying.

Hella Yellowstars in my fogs and Sylvania Silverstars for my headlights... Works wonders for me. And in heavy nightime fog and rain, kick the headlights down to DRL levels and the Yellowstars definately kick butt.

if you really want powerful light, upgrade your harness, go with the nighthawks, put on some Lightforce 240's, clean your lenses everytime you drive at night, and take off the lens guards on your brushguard.

I was surprised to find out how much light output is affected by a small ammount of dirt on your lenses and the lens guards from brushguards. I'm a huge fan of great lighting. My setup (obviously not a 3rd gen) is a set of Hella 500's (driving lights) with 100w bulbs from Performance Products and Silverstars. I will be buying another pair of 500 driving lights, and probably a pair of 500 fog lights. Not sure how I'm going to mount them, but it's a huge bang for the buck improvement.

How much were the Yellowstars since those might be good to look into?

I bought the H3's in 55 watt for $5.82 each. Here's the link. They have them in 85 and 110 watt, also. They have a good selection of all bulbs. It's a decent site and they've done good by me.

You can get them in H4's, but I prefer to use them to supplement my normal driving lights and only for inclement, dark driving conditions.

Nice deal and I think I'll buy a pair shortly. The H3 Silverstars do look good (very white) on the street for show especially with the '99+ stock fog lamps but I really need something better for wet weather.
