All this talk about H4 Piaa Xtreme white bulbs and OSRAM silverstars have been bouncing back and forth in my mind for awhile now. So I jumped on ebay recently, and went nuts with the bids on both sets of lights. I have access to both a 99 SR5 and a 2000 sport edition, (99 is mine, 00 is mom's). I'll be putting the OSRAMs in the 2000, and the xtreme whites in the 99, (from what was written in previous posts, I'm guessing the xtreme whites will go out first). There's probably not much of a difference... If I do find one to be better than the other, I'll try to get pictures of the two side by side.

Pardon my ignorance. I tried searching for this and found alcohol to be the only answer. However, I'm not sure if alcohol is the best solvent to use to remove any excess oil on the bulb surface. I'm guessing you should install the bulbs directly using the plastic packaging, but in case I do touch them, I'm wondering if I should use alcohol, or acetone. Acetone worked wonders on cleaning oil residues in O-chem. Alcohol seems to leave a thin film or haze. I would assume hexane would work damn well... (as if hexane is readily available).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your correct, alcohol is not a very good solvent for oil, but for the amount on a bulb it is probably OK. Acetone or hexane would do a much better job. Everyone probably uses alcohol as it's easy to get hold of, unless you work in a lab.

The 2nd gen is a bulb (semi-sealed) type. I just installed one in mine.

Glad you like your bulbs but you should wait, if you havent tried it yet, for some rain and then see how your bulbs perform. Thats where most people notice the difference in performance between blue colored bulbs and non colored ones. And yea most people just use alcohol because its readily available and seems to work fine for soemtihng small like oil on the bulbs.
