a pacesetter from summit is cheap and fits right in, along with being of the same tri-y design as the mucho expensive headers.

I don't believe the EGR has any connection to the header. It didn't on my truck, which is the same year as your 4Runner. I have a Doug Thorley, better than a Pacesetter (which will rust out), but not as good as a spendy one from LC Engineering.

What do you have to do to install one? Don't you have to trim the pipe back? How much does that cost?

EGR isn't connected to the header -- but the air injection system or whatever is.

Trim what pipe back? It was strictly bolt on for me.

Nice, I thought the header was longer than the stock manafold. If I knew is simply bolted in I would have gotten one a long time ago!

I have had my eye on one of these for a while but it says fabrication may be required. For what?

Some brands may require some fabrication. I don't exactly remember, but I think my header collector pipe was an inch or so off. But it was pretty easy to move things around and make the match. I have had no leaks, either at the header flange, or any of the other connections down from there. It has been on there 5-6 years now. It wasn't too hard to install with the help of a friend.

Oh, and don't be tempted to start your truck with no header "just to see how loud it is."

My LC header bolted right up, EGR works (although I needed to do a little porting to get it to pass the stricter CA smog check this year). My '85 uses the block off plates and the internal EGR ports, some years add the EGR plumbing externally in place of the block off plates:
