Question Head Gasket

Well, after fighting the girl she got mad at me and blew the radiatior. Anyway, after working on her I figured the head gasket blew. How much will it run to get a head gasket replaced on a 2nd Generation 22re? I'm thinking of taking her to the dealer.

Man i just got done replacing the entire head on an 87 4runner 22re. If you have the tools to do it with and have a little mechanical ability you can do it youself. I thought it was going to be a major PIA, But it was no where near as hard as I thought it would be. Just be sure tomark all your vaccum lines really good and remember how all the wires run. Take you time and it will be a piece of cake. Let me know if you have any questions. Does she have air conditioning or power steering? Not that it makes it any harder it just means more brakets to remember and figure out. While you got your head off make sure you have it tested to see if it is warped. Mine had to be shaved .032" but it definately helped in the power department. Talk to people everybody has different tips and tricks. Good Luck.

I'm pretty sure, but wasn't there a head gasket recall for the 2nd gens?> That should still be covered by the stealership if you don't want to mess with it yerself.

i think the recall for the headgasket on the 2nd gens was only for the 3.0s.

After looking around, there are no recalls on the 1990 2.4l. It looks like I'm going to have to send her out to pasture.

I currently own a 2nd GEN with the 3.0L and upon checking for the head gasket recall, I found out it didn't apply to me. Awkward, I thought. Oh well.

Ah, you're kidding, right?

It's a '94.

Were there any symptoms before blowing your gaskets?

I feel the need to ask, because of the concern with mine. Although it's not overheating, I don't like the way the temperature guage moves.

I'll be driving to somewhere, I get there, shut the engine off, and after about 40 minutes when I turn the engine back on, the temperature needle gets up from where it's laying to the middle and twice has it gone over the half-way mark, though not to the "HOT" part.

However, when I start moving, as you may know, the water pump starts working so the needle positions itself to normal reading, and rarely does it move, unless a long stop a at light or something, in which it moves to a tad bit below the half-way mark.

Keep in mind, that I live in PHOENIX, ARIZONA and during the summer it can get pretty damn hot. With the A/C and stop and go traffic, I know it can be a hustle for the YOTA. Still, I'm not comfortable with what it does.

I hope this is not a symptom to future blown head gaskets.

well i dont think my head gasget actually blew... it just popped, as they said, and it leaked

symptoms were just white smoke and rough idling... it went away as the car warmed up, took longer every day. finally we took it to toyota and they said the head gasget had, in fact, popped or blown. either way, it killed me having to fix it. they said it wasnt covered under the recall... which i still want to fight. the dealer that i'm buying my new car from (hopefully) said his brother has a 95 runner and had the same problem, i'm gonna talk to him about that, see if he had to pay

Ah, I see.

Apparently, I have no problems of that sort, in fact, my idling is near perfection.

I hope someone else reads my post and gives me some help or what not.

after getting quoted prices around $600.00 to $1000.00, I found the best deal. One of my buddies I work with at the movie theatre also works at the dealership. One of there techs is willing to change the gasket and the timing for $400.00!!!! Thank God for friends that work at dealerships!!!!
