Question Hard start with Supra 305 cc injectors

Hello Everyone,

I posted a thread earlier in regards to tuning an s-afc with the Supra injectors. Gadget and Creed have been very helpful in their responses and gave me the necessary info where to start. After working out a few user induced bugs from the safc I started with Gadget's low and high throttle settings at -15% and -10% respectively. Aside from an intermittent hard warm start problem, the truck ran very well with no sign of pinging. Due to the hard warm start issue, Gadget suggested I check the injectors to make sure they were the correct part number (part # 23209-46031). They checked out OK so I assumed that I just needed to tweak the safc a little more.

I purchased the br-3 for closed loop tuning along with a digital egt gauge for open loop. Final settings revealed that I was only a few percentage points above and below the initial -15/-10 set-up. I began searching for as many hard warm start discussions. I discovered that a few members had a similar problem but with larger 330 or 370cc injectors. Further reading also revealed a reply post from Gadget indicating that these larger injectors could cause flooding at start-up due to the larger amounts of fuel being dumped. I was hoping this wasn't going be an issue with the 305’s since no else seems to have the problem. I don't know if this is worth mentioning, but during my warm/hot start issues...my short term fuel trim on the br-3 would drop to as low as -16%. After start-up, a few seconds of rough idling would ensue. Within a minute or two the engine will idle correctly and both short and long term fuel trim would be back to 0.

I was hoping to take a page out of the 330 or 370 cc user's handbook and use the supra maf, but a follow-up post from Gadget explained that it is in the stock ecm's programming that causes too much fuel to be injected at start-up. So I'm pretty much plum out of ideas.

This maybe a long shot, but I'm using denso platinum 1-step colder plugs. Would it help to run a different type of plug? I apologize for being long winded but I was hoping someone can share some insight or maybe even a possible fix.

Thanks,

Michael

When you got your 305 cc injectors did you have them cleaned or stick them straight in? If you didn't have them cleaned your hard start problem could be because they're dirty and have a poor spray pattern.

Hard start with Supra 305 cc injectors

Hi Milan,

Thanks for responding. The injectors were bought new from a Toyota dealer. I'm thinking of putting back the stock injectors just to start a process of elimination.

Thanks

-Mike

You could try to test a set of copper spark plugs. They don't last as long but do make a stronger spark.

4runner4ever,

Looks like I'm headed that route. I'll be putting the stock spark plugs back on this evening and see how it runs. Thanks for the advise.

hmmmm hard starting....

well, you could always try custom made injectors from RC racing. I have those, they do not have starting problems--nor does anyone who has them have starting problems. The hard starting discussion started because someone was substituting some funky mitsubishi injectors ( 350cc ) to get more fuel. Everyone I have talked to who has the RC racing 370cc injectors does not have a hard starting problem, in fact, I had to ask gadget what hard starting was since i had never heard of that problem from any of my friends with the same setup.

if the plugs don't work, let's try the Supra MAF . . . i found you one for the price you were looking for! the extra airflow at startup should cure the problem if it's a too-rich issue. plus, all the extra power won't hurt . . .
