Has anyone Gifted a vehicle in Washington State? I am thinking of paying off a friends 4runner, and in return he will gift it to me. Do you know how this works, or is this possible, or will the state Audit us and make us pay sales tax?

Any insight would be great.

You could always call the DOL and talk to one of the felons.

There are ways of doing it...... but it is sorta hard. They want their sales tax..... The best way to do it.... is to give him the money and have him pay it off. If you pay it off... then it's a little harder.... If you guys were family... then it would be easy.

In Missouri we can no longer do the one dollar sale. I tried it about two years ago and the DMV laughed at me. First time I had seen a smile at the DMV. Anyway, they let me do it for a sale price of 100$.

I had a Subaru parts car given to me. The owner wrote a bill of sale for $1 he said to make it legit. The lady at DMV said it would be easier to do it as a gift (I'm not related to seller), so I had him redo the bill of sale. Also, it was not running.....he just did not want to pay the wrecking yard to haul it away. But it is also a 1989, so it was not worth much anyway.

I actually just called the DOL and the lady said, all I need is the owner to write a letter saying it was a gift. And he has to sign it, it doesn't even have to be Notarized. If it's a Washington State Vehicle, no proof of Tax paid is required.
