thanks, I was thinking of trucks and 4 Runners all together. I see your point. I've got a 89 truck and a 90 & 92 4 Runners, they all look the same. So I was asuming the pick-ups would fall in the same generation line as the 4 Runners.

You will find that on forums like this most tend to use the "gen" labels on trucks to match 4Runners, even though it is incorrect. We truck guys don't mind, the kids play nice so we don't mind if they have no clue... ;-)
This is the correct sequence:
Toyota Pickup Ancestry in the US
First gen: 1969-1972
Second gen: 1973-1974 *first longbed
Third gen: 1975-1978 *1975-20R & the first 5 speed introduced, 1976- Hilux name dropped, 1977-SR5 model added and one millionth truck produced)
Fourth gen: 1979-1983 *1979-first US 4x4 model, 1981- 22R & a diesel (31 mpg EPA city!) 1982-83 Trekker sport utility avail. (simply a modified pickup)
Fifth gen: 1984-1988 *1984-first XtraCab & first 4Runner, 1985 first 22RE and the first One Ton, 1986 first IFS, first 22RET, first turbo diesel and the last year of the diesel engine in the US, 1988 the 3.0V6 replaced the 22RET,
Sixth gen: 1989-1995 *All Toyota pickups sold in the US in 1994 were made in USA!
Seventh gen: 1995 1/2 -2004 *Tacoma model
Eigth gen: 2005+ (Over 11 million Toyota light trucks have now been produced!)

There I knew someone knew and would chime in. He's right most people with the Toy trucks don't really refer to them in the terms of gens. For some odd reason it's just us 4Runner folk.

most guys that go by generation for pickups call '79-83 trucks 1st gens, '84-88 is 2nd gen, and '89-95 is 3rd gen
and if i'm not mistaken, the hilux was essentially the same truck(body style wise) from '73-78. '73 and '74 it came with the 18R motor, then the 20R came along in '75

It also came in a panel van type. These were really produced and sold, just not in the US. (Well, the pickup below was.)

that little white truck isn't a hilux, it's a stout! kind of like the older brother of the hilux
i saw one for free about a month ago in running shape, but it didn't have a hood or front fenders...i figured they'd be impossible to track down, but if i could've found them it would've made an awesome project, either as a street rod or SAS it and turn it into a 4x4, maybe swap in something other than the old pushrod 3R

If you buy a decent vehichle to start things won't be expensive.
My rig for instance.
4500.00 initial purchase 89 4x4 22re 4runner
rims and tires 33x10.50 bfg on 3rd gen rims 550.00 (yotatech buy)
4.88 gearing front and rear 1300.00 installed
Complete long travel front end 4,800.00
Full brake Job - 900.00 (Midas prices...geez)
Fixing the rear window- 400.00
Unecessary engin and exhaust mods 900.00
Rear suspension coming 4,000.00(estimate)
A very usable truck totalling 17,350.00
Now if you just want to own one and not get crazy suspensionwise like i did, you're only looking at about 5800.00 for the truck (which came with 33x12.50's and a trailmaster 4 inch lift), the brake job, and fixing the rear window.
If the 05 4runner is going for between 5800.00 and 17350.00 I better go get one.
Granted if you make a stupid purchase....a beat up 4runner can get expensive. But if you make a good purchase things aren't always that bad.

Got and 86 GT for 500.00
saved me 300.00 on my insurance (multicar discount)
Got hit by a 4Runner
Settlement was for 2100.00
I repaired the minor body damage for 100.00
did some brakes to pass the B&L inspection 100.00
and made out ok
Total price: I gained 1700.00
Owning and old car isn't always expensive.
I know it's a rare circumstance, but hey....it's reality.
