i know theres a lot of threads on re-gearing, but i can't understand any of it.

i have a 97 4banger with a 5speed manual transmission. i've also got 32" BFG's and a 2" lift on it right now. It's a naturally slow car but it feels even more laggy due to the tires, i was thinking about re-gearing it. does this seem logical?

i also can't find any place (on the internet that i've searched for at least) that sells new gear sets. How much would this whole process cost? (buying installation etc.)

go at least 4.88's. 5.29's will give you better crawling, but buzzier at hwy speeds.

front & rear gears + install kits can be had for about 5-600. PORC/Randy's/JT's are a few shops to get you started. labour..not sure but at least the same amount if youre re & re-ing it at the shop. if youve got spare 3rds, get those regeared and swap em out yourself if youre mechaincally inclined. most shops wont touch stuff thats not bought from them..at least thats the trend here anyway

as of right now i'm just looking for speed. i hate being passed while getting on freeways and such. and when i offroad its usually just zipping through washes and down pole-line roads so crawling is not high up on my priorities.

I'll look around town for places that do stuff like this, but if anybody has any suggestions then please feel free to share them with me.

I'm in a similar situation but have an automatic on my 2.7 and will be moving to some 265-70-17s so I'm thinking 4.30 or 4.56 to keep the gas mileage reasonable...

the only thing it sees other than the road are the occasional beach trip and street flooding.

4 wheel parts .com has a complete kit with gears and master install on sale right now for Toyota 4 cylinder 419.00 free shipping and each kit has
2 Genuine Gear Ring and Pinion sets and 2 master install kits with Timmkin bearings
As for getting them installed if you can pull the 3rds out yourself it should run around 150-300 each as I was quoted from the local tranny shop 600 for the pair they do all the work. I did mine myself with some help from a mechinest for a 100 bucks only took about an hour after I pulled the 3rds.

I was going to do the gear change (probably 4.56) after I went with the bigger tires if I feel I really need it due to low gas mileage or if it gets really sluggish... I was planning on going the same route pulling the 3rd and taking it to a shop...

I want to go 4.10 front and rear for 30 in tires but can't find a place to buy them, that and how hard is it to install my self?

i wouldn't regear for 4.10's. I am guessing you have 3.90 something for your gearing. If you really want 4.10's just get some used taco diffs, they go all the time on ttora for that gearing.

If your gonna actually spend the time and buy new gears and install kits i'd go at least 4.56 with 30's. I ran 4.88's with 29's for two weeks and loved it


also its very hard to set up gears.

Well I've got a 07 Tacoma with 8in dif and 3.73 stock. But if you say I can run with 4.56 then cool. 4.10 is hard to find new. Any idea if that is 30 spline?
