gaskets for timing belt covers - rtv ok?

Im trying to finish up a timing belt change on a 98 v6 taco.
the timing cover gaskets are all worn out. I was thinking about ordering the original (adhesive?) gaskets from toyota, but Im wondering if I could save some money & just go ahead and use rtv sealant or something else? has anyone else tried this?

How about some sticky backed foam from the weatherization section of your local hardware store?

works for me, the cheaper&easier, the better...should it be ok to use that stuff in the engine compartment though? seeing as how its a harsh environment and all...

rock auto has a 'timing cover gasket kit' for around 15 bux; I was thinking about just going with that, but if the plain ole' weather seal from home depot works, I could just go use that stuff instead.

The stuff from Rock auto would work and less spendy too. I've used the Toyota foam and it does not look very special although it may be designed for higher temps and more resistance to oil, coolant, etc.
